A ballet often tells a story. • What does the word “ballet” mean? • The word “ballet” means “to dance”. “Ballet “is the French spelling of the Italian word “ballare”. The French language is used for teaching ballet.

  3. More Ballet Basics • What is classical ballet? • Classical ballet is a style of dance that follows the techniques developed in the 17th century by the Academie Royale de Danseby King Louis XIV. The term also applies to ballets from the second half of the 19th century (such as the Nutcracker) in which pattern, movement and form are essential.
