  2. Mindanao Banana Farmers & Exporters Association, Inc. (MBFEA) VISION MBFEA IS THE UNIFYING FORCE AND VOICE FOR THE SMALL AND MEDIUM CAVENDISH BANANA GROWERS & EXPORTERS. MISSION TO UNIFY AND LEAD THE SMALL AND MEDIUM CAVENDISH FARMERS AND EXPORTERS IN PRODUCING WORLD CLASS QUALITY BANANAS.

  3. Mindanao Banana Farmers & Exporters Association (MBFEA) Objectives • To promote and foster unity and better relations and cooperation among its members through closer association and cooperative efforts. • To serve and work for the common good and interests of its members.

Mindanao Banana Farmers & Exporters Association (MBFEA) Objectives • To serve as the central coordinating agency where banana small farmers and exporters can be assisted on market information, research on materials, business guidance and technical advice, monitoring in operation on trade opportunities, price trends, availability and movement of goods, as well as location of domestic and foreign markets, domestic and foreign buyers, and finally to represent the small banana farmers and exporters individually and/or collectively in his/their business dealing with any section;

  7. CURRENT BANANA SITUATION (CAVENDISH) • China Market: 90% of the total production is marketed to China. • CHINA MARKET QUASI-BAN TO PHILIPPINE BANANAS: 1,053,000 boxes of 13.5kg. or 14,215 metric tons of bananas, being chopped weekly as a result.

  12. FEDCO: A MEMBER OF MBFEA • Who is FEDCO? FEDCO or Federation of Cooperatives in Mindanao have 13 Member Cooperatives located in Region XI, with around 3,000 Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) and small banana growers owning 3,000 hectares of land planted only to export-quality fresh Cavendish Bananas that are both “highland” and “lowland” varieties.

  14. DEVELOPMENT OF THE DOMESTIC MARKET FOR CAVENDISH BANANAS • Objectives: 1. income and employment generation; and, 2. hunger mitigation.

Why would it generate income and employment? • Volume Management – Zero Waste • Increase Productivity – Market both Class A & B • Generate Income even during Lean Months • Continuous Labor Employment • Utilization of Unmarketable Products (By-Products) - i.e. flour, noodles, pastries, ketchup, feeds

Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA Initiated Project • Country Focused Training Course on Davao Industry Cluster Capacity Enhancement (Banana Cluster) at Yokohama International Center, JICA from October 19 to 28, 2009 under the International Cooperation Program of the Government of Japan.

Exploring New Markets for Cooperatives and Small Farmers--JICA’s DICCEP Way-- Year 2010 Japan Diamond Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Multi-Purpose Cooperative (DARBMUPCO) Federation of Cooperatives in Mindanao (FEDCO) In 2010, under the Davao Banana Cluster Team, a public-private partnership, DARBMUPCO supplied FEDCO bananas for its Japanese Buyers.

Exploring New Markets for Cooperatives and Small Farmers--JICA’s DICCEP Way-- Year 2010 - 11 China Santo Tomas Banana Industry Cluster Association (STOBICA) Federation of Cooperatives in Mindanao (FEDCO) In 2010, the Davao Banana Cluster Team organized STOBICA, and sold their bananas under the brand “STOBICA to FEDCO’s China Buyers.

Exploring New Markets for Cooperatives and Small Farmers--JICA’s DICCEP Way-- Year 2012 Davao City Small Farmers/ Cooperatives Mindanao Banana Farmers and Exporters Association (MBFEA) & FEDCO In 2012, with the “China Crisis” the Davao Banana Cluster Team, MBFEA initially sold fresh bananas to local consumers in Davao City from small farmers and cooperatives.

Exploring New Markets for Cooperatives and Small Farmers--JICA’s DICCEP Way-- Year 2013 (from DICCEP to NICCEP) LGU/DepEdFeeding Program/ Local Market Mindanao Banana Farmers and Exporters Association (MBFEA) & FEDCO Small Farmers/ Cooperatives Ripening Chamber/ Cold Storage In 2013, the Davao Banana Cluster Team shall be provided with Ripening Chamber/Cold Storage by DTI under its Shared Service Facility (SSF) Program and DOLE to support its intent to support LGU/DepEd Feeding Program and supply domestic market .

Exploring New Markets for Cooperatives and Small Farmers--JICA’s DICCEP Way-- Year 2013 (from DICCEP to NICCEP) Australia Mindanao Banana Farmers and Exporters Association (MBFEA) & FEDCO MBFEA Goes to In 2013, MBFEA/FEDCO shall conduct benchmarking and exposure trip to Australia for possible banana buyers under the National Industry Cluster Capacity Enhancement Program (NICCEP).
