  2. Causes: • MILITARISM • ALLIANCES • IMPERIALISM • NATIONALISM Hint, hint… …wink, wink!

  3. Militarism: policy of building up strong armed forces to prepare for war - European nations expanded armies/ navies An Example: Germany built its navy, Britain responded by adding more ships to its fleet = race for naval dominance strained relations between the two

  4. Alliances: agreement, support or friendship between two or more countries or parties European powers formed rival alliances to protect themselves • Germany organized the Triple Alliance with Austria Hungary & Italy • France responded by linking itself to Russia & Britain: Triple Entente France Germany Austria-Hungary Russia Italy Britain

  5. Imperialism • Britain, France, Russia, Germany & Italy scrambled for colonies in Africa, Asia & the Pacific • SPAM taught us that the U.S. was now a new Imperial force to be reckoned with!

  6. Nationalism: pride in one’s nation • European nationalists demanded freedom & self-gov’t • Belief: people with a common language & culture should throw off foreign rule & form their own countries

  7. Pros & Cons of Nationalism +encouraged unity & independence at the same time -created mistrust & rivalry between nations • An Example: • France & Germany go to war in 1870 • France lost & had to give Germany Alsace-Lorraine (iron-rich) • France never forgot this blow to their pride & hoped to regain the territory in the future • = You come out of war anticipating future war

  8. Pros & Cons of Allies +: allies agreed to support each other in case of attack -: crisis involving one member affected nation’s allies = MINOR incident can spark MAJOR war http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi2y6k6nfHE

  9. Your Turn!!! Make an acronym, mnemonic or memory device for remembering: • 4 causes of WW1 • Triple Alliance • Triple Entente • INCLUDE: 1 illustration for each (6 total) How Will YOU Remember?

  10. Hangman • Get out: • a piece of scratch paper • Pen/pencil • Key Terms Packet RULES: The hangman is in charge! 4 letter guesses before you can guess the word!
