About me… • BA in English Literature & MA in Liberal Studies (w/ plenty of courses in education) from Loyola University Maryland. • Maryland certification (APC) in secondary English/language arts. • 11th year teaching--Catholic & public school/ middle & high school experience. • Member of Immaculate Conception, Towson.

  4. Language Arts—8th grade curriculum • Vocabulary—Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop; additional weekly words based on Greek/Latin prefixes. • English—Sentences, verbal phrases, clauses, punctuation. • Writing—Incorporated in reading & English. Varied writing assignments based on literature themes or grammar skills (description, exposition, narrative). Research paper late winter/early spring. • Oral Language—Debates based on Scholastic magazine. • Literature—Prentice Hall Literature. Genre-based units.

  5. Religion • Church History & Morality. • Family Life. Mrs. Rekus and Mrs. Vernick will be talking about drugs and alcohol. • We will read the gospel weekly for the upcoming weekend.

  6. High School Preparation • Interviewing and selection process in conjunction with Mrs. Vernick. • Thank-you letters in language arts. • Practice questions for placement test later in the fall. Purchasing a placement test prep book and working at home may be helpful.

  7. Organization/Homework • Homework should be written in planners. I give daily language arts homework and religion homework 1-2 times per week. • Please save all work until after exams. A home folder might be helpful to keep papers after unit tests.

  8. Please stay in touch!!! • Email or call if you have any questions or concerns. I’m always happy to talk with you. It’s always better to ask. • Please check Powerschool regularly. Missing assignments can be made up!

  9. Announcements!!! • 8th grade parent meeting is Wednesday, September 10th at 7:30 in the parish center. • 6-8 chaperones are needed for the 8th grade retreat on Friday, September 26th from 7:30am-noon. • Occasional volunteers needed at recess for clubs or supervision. • If you have old chess sets or board games that you would like to donate, I will gratefully accept them!
