Revised Agenda IRA Legislative Workshop November 11 & 12, 2010 Washington, DC All meetings will be held in: Room: 333 at 444 North Capitol St. NW Washington, DC Thursday, November 11th 11:30 – 12:30 Registration and Lunch (provided) 12:30 – 1:00 “The big picture – what are the issues policy makers are trying to solve and why.” 1:00 – 2:00 “What are the Reading Issues on the table?” 2:00 – 2:45 What are the current Federal & National Issues. What is the status of LEARN? State Literacy Teams? What will the new teacher education program review mean? 2:45 – 3:30 Education Policy Sci 101 – “What is the system and how is it supposed to work?” What is an appropriation? A budget allocation? What is the definition of SBRR? How are these decisions made? 3:30 – 5:00 Education Policy at the State Level 101 – “Who should I be calling to talk about what issues?” The governors have what role in education? Friday, November 12th 8:00 – 8:30 Breakfast (provided) 8:30 – 9:30 Core Standards – “Yes, there are opportunities ….” 41 states have adopted the standards and 4 more states are expected to adopt soon. 9:30 – 11:00 “Selecting issues at the state level – What you need to do, how to do it, and how to follow up” 11:00 – Noon “Negotiating – the art and science of being involved” Noon – 1:00 Lunch (provided) 1:00 – 2:30 “Organizing at the state council level – getting your leadership & membership involved, keeping them informed and active” 2:30 – 3:00 Summary and Adjournment International Reading Association Legislative Workhop November 2010
