AP Lit Exam Prompts • You will have three prompts to respond to on the AP Lit exam: • Responding to a prose reading selection • Our first Writing Prompt • Responding to a poem • Very likely that you will be asked to compare/contrast two poems • Responding to a work of literature that you’ve read

  3. Scoring • Each essay you write will receive a score from 0 to 9 • Your essays will be read by 4 graders and each essay will receive an average score based on these 4 scores. • Overall, your essays are worth 60% of your total AP exam score.

  4. My General Feedback • Be sure to answer the question of the prompt: • Analyze how the author uses literary devices to establish Lutie Johnson’s relationship to the urban environment. • Your essay should go beyond providing examples of the literary devices in the passage. • You must discuss how these devices establish Johnson’s relationship to her environment. • By personifying the wind as an attacking force, Petry underscores the hostile relationship between the city and Johnson. • End each body paragraph with some connection to your thesis. • Avoid using words like ‘a lot of’ or lots • Petry uses a lot of personification. • Petry frequently uses personification. • Use the present tense when writing about literature. • In a literary analysis essay, leave out words like I, you or we. • Overall, your essays were the strongest set I’ve read in response to this prompt!

Essay Road Map • Introduction • Author • Title of work • Paraphrase the prompt • Literary elements to consider • Thesis • Body Paragraphs (go for 3) • Topic sentence (your claim) • Support from the text • Explanation > the significance or ‘so what’ of your example • Transition to next paragraph • Conclusion • Go beyond mere summary of your main points • Give insight into the ‘so what’ of your essay.
