  1. Nostra Atate Decree on Ecumenism

  2. Questions to Ponder • When should dialogue be used instead of spreading the Gospel to all nations? • Are other religions to be seen as contrary to the truth in Christ? • How should we proceed with dialogue? • Jews were blamed for killing Christ (deicide), why would this have come about?

  3. The Catholic Church rejects nothing of what is true and holy in these religions. I has a high regard for the manner of life and conduct, the precepts and doctrines which, although differing in many ways from its own teaching, nevertheless often reflect a ray of that truth which enlightens all men and women….Let Christians, while witnessing to their own faith and way of life, acknowledge, preserve and encourage the spiritual and moral truths found among non-Christians, together with their social life and culture.

  4. Jewish Origins • Holocaust • Anti-Semitism

  5. The Debate • Jews as evil for killing Christ • The Jews are part of the Old Covenant • Supersessionism-theory of salvation history that maintains the Christian church established by the new covenant in Jesus supersedes, displaces, or replaces the people of the “old” or first covenant between God and the Jewish people • Paul argued that even the Gentiles could obtain salvation • The Eastern Church said that it was not a good idea

  6. The Solution Integrate the material on Judaism into a larger framework of reflection on the relationship between the church and other religions.

  7. Notion of “global village” emerges and the common origin and destiny of all people: Humanity forms but one community. This is so because all stem from the one stock which God created to people the entire earth…, and also because all share a common destiny, namely God. His providence, evident goodness, and saving designs extend to all humankind…against the day when the elect are gathered together in the holy city which is illumined by the glory of God, and in whose splendor all peoples will walk (NA #1).

  8. God’s Chosen People • God’s covenant cannot be broken • Jesus was a Jew-as was Paul, Mary, Peter, Phillip…

  9. Abrahamic Traditions(Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) • All stem from Abraham • All are monotheistic (in theory) • All stress devotion to God and care for neighbor

  10. Other Faiths Many other faiths reflect a portion of the truth • Hinduism focuses on beauty and love of God • Buddhism focuses on meditation • Islam focuses on the ineffable nature of God • Judaism sees God in the world

  11. Discrimination All forms of discrimination are wicked • Theism • Sexism • Racism • Ageism

  12. Where do we go from here? • Do not teach what is contrary to the Gospel • We must enter into dialogue • We have more in common than what we differ in • We must collaborate to reach godly ends
