  2. Suspected Unapproved Parts Program (SUPS Program) • This presentation is designed to inform industry of current FAA policy and guidelines in the area of SUPS. • Requested by the Airworthiness Advisory Group of the 1996 Baltimore Aviation Summit.

  4. SUPS Program Office • Established November, 1995 • AVR-20 • Washington Dulles International Airport • Focus on improving standardization & integration of policy, training, and technical information • Generates Unapproved Parts Notification

Unapproved Parts Notification • Advises owners, operators, maintenance entities and manufacturers of specific parts which were not produced with a production approval • Notifications may appear in AC43.16 Airworthiness Alerts • Published by FAA, AFS-610, P.O. Box 26460, Oklahoma City, OK 73125

  6. What should I do? • Inspect your affected aircraft and/or stock for the referenced part • If found contact entities in the FURTHER INFORMATION section, and your local FSDO

  7. Why do I need Approved Parts? • FAR43.13(b) states ...maintenance must be performed such that the product is at least equal to its original or properly altered condition.

  8. How does FAR 43.13 pertain to replacement parts? • When installing replacement parts, the installer must have a reasonable basis to determine the replacement part will render the aircraft airworthy. • That is, it is at least equal to its original condition after parts replacement..

  9. HOW CAN I DETERMINE A REPLACEMENT PART WILL RENDER AN AIRCRAFT AIRWORTHY ?

  17. FAA-PMA PARTS • IF PARTS ARE TOO SMALL OR IMPRACTICAL TO MARK A TAG MAY BE USED • INSTALLATION ELIGIBILITY MAY APPEAR IN A REFERENCED DOCUMENT OR CATALOG

  18. TECHNICAL STANDARD ORDER (TSO) PARTS • TSO PARTS ARE PRODUCED UNDER FAR 21 subpart O • TSO PARTS HAVE MARKING REQUIREMENTS

  19. TSO PARTSMARKING REQUIREMENTS • NAME AND ADDRESS OF THE MANUFACTURER • NAME, TYPE, PART NO. OR MODEL DESIGNATION NO. OF THE ARTICLE • S/N OR DATE OF MFG.. • THE APPLICABLE TSO NO.

  20. TYPE OR PRODUCTION CERTIFICATE PARTS • PARTS PRODUCED BY AN AIRCRAFT, ENGINE, OR PROPELLER MANUFACTURER • YOU SHOULD HAVE DOCUMENTATION TRACEABLE TO THE TC OR PC HOLDER

  21. ACCEPTABLE PARTS • STANDARD PARTS CONFORMING TO AN ESTABLISHED INDUSTRY OR U. S. SPECIFICATION • OWNER PRODUCED PARTS • PARTS FOR WHICH INSPECTION AND TESTS HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED BY PERSONS AUTHORIZED TO DETERMINE AIRWORTHINESS STANDARDS
