History and Facts Where they live Organization • The Ojibwa Indians are also known as the Chippewa, Ojibway and Ojibwe Indians. • Individuals in the United States typically refer to the tribe as the Chippewa Indians. • Individuals in Canada refer to the tribe as the Ojibway Indians. • They speak both English and Ojibway. • Lived in homes made of bark called wigwams. Also lived in homes called tipis. • Made canoes out of birchbark for transportation. • Used tools such as bows and arrows, spears and traps. • The Ojibwa Indians live in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Canada. • The Ojibwa live in the northwestern part of Wisconsin. • Live on reservations in tribes • Each tribe has it’s own government, laws, police, and services. • Leaders are called chiefs. Were typically men in the past. Most recently men and women could be elected chief. Facts How they live • They refer to themselves as Anishinabe meaning original person. • Wore leather headbands with feathers standing up. • Most known for their beadwork • The children often times help around the house, go to school and go hunting for food with their parents. • The women took care of the home and children. Some also farmed. • Men were also farmers.
