  2. The old woman, the cat, and the Angel

  3. Once upon a time, not very long ago, there was an old woman who lived all alone in a little house in the middle of the countryside (nongcun, xiangcun).

  4. What do you think? • Was she kind or bad? • Was she rich or poor? • Was she married?

  5. She was kind • She was poor • And she was a widow.

  6. The kind old widow • She had been a kind person all her life, helping other people and taking care of her children.

  7. Now she was all alone. Her children had left her and were too busy with their jobs and their own families

  8. Her cat, Jimmy, was her only friend. • She was very lonely but she did not worry.

  9. Then one cold, rainy day, she was sitting by the fireplace (huo lu). She was too poor to have a TV set.

  10. Guess what happened to her.

  11. An angel came to her!

  12. The poor old lady was very surprised. She jumped out of her chair, but the angel said gently (wen rou de):

  13. "You don't know me, but I'm your angel and I've taken care of you all your life. • You have never met me but I have always been near you.”

  14. “you've been so kind to everybody – you spent the best years of your life to take care of your children and now they don't come to see you. • I know that you've helped everybody you've met.”

  15. You've been so good and kind that I've come to give you a second chance. • So here I am to grant (yunxu )you three wishes. You can ask for anything you want and you'll get it. Think very well– tell me your three wishes and they'll come true (shi xian)."

  16. "Oh dear," she said, "What a surprise. Can I really ask for anything I want?" • "Yes," said the angel, "anything you want." • "Well, you can see I'm so old and weak that I cannot walk, my face is full of wrinkles (zhouwen) and so ugly that nobody bothers (mafan) to look at me. I wish ......"

  17. What was her wish? • I wish I had money • I wish I had more children • I wish I were young again • I wish I had more friends.

  18. The angel gave her wish. • She changed into a beautiful young woman with long blond flowing hair.

  19. . • Only her eyes didn't change, they were still as kind and friendly as before.

  20. "You have two wishes left," said the angel. • "Now I'm young and beautiful," said the transformed (gaibian) old woman, "but I'm still very poor, so I wish ...."

  21. What was her next wish? • I wish I were President • I wish I were a singer • I wish I had a husband • I wish I were rich.

  22. She became very rich! • Her little old house disappeared (Xiao shi), and a big beautiful one appeared.

  23. There was a garden, a swimming pool and two cars.

  24. There was also a lot of money in a room at the basement (dixiashi,diceng)

  25. "You have one more wish left," said the angel • “Think very well. After this I will go away and you’ll never see me again

  26. "Let me think," she said, "All my life I've been poor, and since my husband died and my children left me I've been living on my own. Now, I've become young and beautiful and very rich.

  27. A lot of young men will run after me. But will they be kind?

  28. Who has been kind to me? Jimmy my dear cat! I'll give my last wish to him, for he's been the only true friend I've had these last few years. I wish...

  29. What was her last wish? • I wish my cat were also rich • I wish my cat died • I wish my cat were a man • I wish I were with my children

  30. Suddenly the cat changed into a handsome young man. They looked at each other, smiled and kissed.

  31. "Now that you've had your wishes granted (yunxu)," said the angel, "may you live happily forever" and disappeared (Xiao shi).

  32. The young couple (fu qi) were happy and spent the rest of the day walking around their big house and garden, having a swim in the swimming pool, and having a delicious lunch.

  33. In the afternoon they went for a drive in their car and talked about their new life and future plans (ji hua).

  34. Talk about it. • If you were the rich couple what would you do with all the money?

  35. What can you remember? • What are the old woman’s three wishes? • Where did she live? • Who was her friend? • Was she happy?

  36. The poor widow’s wishes… • I wish I were young again • I wish I were rich, • I wish I my cat became a man
