  2. What exactly is a polyhedron? A 3-dimensional geometric solid with flat faces, straight edges, and sharp corners Word comes from Classic Greek where poly = “many”, hedron = “base” or “seat” Plural form: polyhedra or polyhedrons

  3. Polyhedron Examples Hexahedron Tetrahedron Octahedron Dodecahedron Great Cubicuboctahedron Small Stellated Dodecahedron Octagonal Prism Icosidodecahedron

  4. Polyhedron Art Projects

  5. Altered Polyhedron (rhombus)

  6. Materials • Materials: • Rhombus template tracer • Pencil • Construction paper * • Scissors *You can substitute construction paper with a variety of other materials (e.g. regular paper, cardstock, aluminum foil, plastic, etc.)

  7. Procedure Using the tracer, trace out 30 rhombus shapes on to construction paper. Cut out 30 rhombus shapes carefully. It is important to have all shapes the same size. Immediately after cutting, place a dot on the backside of the shape. Assemble all 30 pieces together by “hooking” pieces together in groups of 3 or 5. Group of 3 Group of 5

  8. Adaptations & Extensions • For younger grades: • Create a collaborative class polyhedron • Students individually design their rhombus shape • Teacher assembles it together • Extend the activity: • Create recycled art, lamps, ornaments, etc.

  9. Cross-Curricular Connections • MATH • Shape & Space: 3-D Objects & 2-D Shapes • K - single attribute of 3-D objects • Gr. 1 - composite 2-D shapes & 3-D objects • Gr. 2 - cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, pyramids, triangles, squares, rectangles, circles • Gr. 3 - faces, edges & vertices of 3-D objects • Gr. 4 - rectangular & triangular prisms • Gr. 5 - parallel, intersecting, perpendicular, vertical & horizontal edges & faces • Gr. 6 - regular & irregular polygons • Gr. 7 - geometric constructions • Gr. 8 - top, front, and side view of 3-D objects • SOCIALS • Polyhedron Structures Around the World
