  3. Tone: author’s attitude vs. character setting and situation Think about the fate of many of the ‘manly’ characters in the play and the ultimate fate of Macbeth… What does Shakespeare believe about true manhood?

  4. Cultural applicability In American society, what does it mean to “be a man”? “Grow a pair”: call for “manly” courage, dangerous or even stupid action.
