  1. The Fan District Lighting Project – Newsletter PROJECT SUMMARY: This project, as proposed by City Council, envisions ornamental light fixtures installed from The Boulevard east to Harrison and from Floyd north to Grace. Construction will occur in phases as funding is made available. This newsletter addresses portions of the lighting project that have received funding by Richmond City Council. The Street Lighting division of the city of Richmond Department of Public Utilities (DPU) will install decorative light fixtures and poles along West Grace Street between the 1100 and 2700 blocks and on Mulberry Street between the 100 and 700 blocks. These new lights will increase lighting for both the roadway and pedestrian sidewalk area. The existing fixtures use standard High Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) lamps with low color rending (yellow light). The new lamps will improve color rendition by providing the appearance of a warm whiter color. In addition, overhead street light wiring will be replaced with underground service wiring. PROJECT STATUS: Phase 1, of the currently funded project, was completed in August 2011. DPU ordered the light poles and fixtures for Phase 2 in 2011. Light poles have been delivered and delivery of the fixtures is anticipated in mid-February. DPU will begin marking the locations for the new poles, per the engineer’s design, in late January. Assuming receipt of the light fixtures in February construction work should begin in March 2012. With all materials available at the start of the project, construction should take approximately 8 weeks. Mayor Dwight C.
