  12. Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects • Reading Standards for Literacy In Science and Technical Subjects 6-12 • 1/3 of college students require remedial courses • Many students entering workforce are unable to read and comprehend technical manuals • Reading is critical to build knowledge • Understanding of domain-specific words and phrases are important • Attention to detail is stressed • Follow detail descriptions is relevant

  13. How to “talk” about theELA Standards • The Literacy Common Core Standards as written do not clearly articulate a set of codes with which to refer to. • A code has been developed • Aide in distinguishing Anchor Standards from Grade-Specific Standards • Ease of “conversation” about the standards • A KEY is necessary for “decoding” the code

  20. What This Looks Like in the Classroom • Handout 3A • Reading, Anchor Standard, Key Ideas and Details 1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. (What students should be able to do at the end of Grade 12)

  21. Close Reading and Answering Text-Dependent Questions Reading Anchor Standards Language • Questions can only be answered by close reading • Requires an understanding that extends beyond recall • Often require students to infer

  22. Content Rich Texts Reading Anchor Standards Language • Slow Down • Students should grovel with the text. The students need to struggle once in a while on the text. They should ask for help when needed. • Ask students, “What did you learn or not learn from text?” See the text itself as a source of evidence

  23. General Academic Vocabulary Reading Anchor Standards Language • Tier 1—everyday vocabulary • Tier 2—general academic words—words used in text but do not hear often • Tier 3—subject related

  24. Discussion Could Include the Following: • What specific skills are needed to meet these standard statements? • What other strands should be incorporated to help support this shift? • What do these standard statements look like in your classroom? RST.9-10.1 and RST.11-12.2 • Questions can only be answered by close reading • Requires an understanding that extends beyond recall • Often require students to infer

  25. Sample Performance Tasks • Handout 3B • Groups by subject areas • Work together to share how these standards will look in your particular class
