  2. Mayan Gods The Mayans were polytheistic so they had many gods. These are just five of their many gods.   3. Holy Buildings Temples Caracol: This temple was built in the 6th century. It contains pyramids tombs and Mayan art. Tikal: This temple was built in 700 AD. It is best Known for its tower with a two headed snake. Uxmal: Built in the 10th century it is one of the most complex temples built. Chich’en Itza: It is one of the largest and most popular temples. It was built in 1000 AD.

  4. Mayan Creation Myth • Popol Vuh was the god that created the world • Popol had four efforts at creation. First were animals, then there was wet clay and wood, then man. Origin of Sun and Moon The older brother of the two brothers in Popol’s family was jealous of Popol for being so powerful. The Youngest one, Popol, becomes the Sun, his mother becomes the Moon, and the Elder brother was transformed into wild pigs and other forest animals.

  5. Other Mayan Religion Facts • Worshiped gods in nature • Itzam’na was there main god • The Mayans thought the journey to the afterlife was very dangerous. You had to travel through the underworld and would end up in Haven. • Believe the end of the world is December 21, 2010. • Human sacrifice was a normal religious practice.
