    2. Global Design Studio I am offering up a solution and enduring foundation in Global Design StudioI am offering up a solution and enduring foundation in Global Design Studio

    3. OUTLINE This afternoon I intend to cover the following in speedy fashion, given the small window of opportunity to discuss the many components of Global Design Studio. I have decided to first introduce you to what GDS is and then show you how it is structured upon the Design Process and how this serve as a foundation for international education. Lastly, I want to show you specific examples of Global Design Studio projects to illustrate how this concept can work effectively and efficiently. This afternoon I intend to cover the following in speedy fashion, given the small window of opportunity to discuss the many components of Global Design Studio. 4. This is our web site, our home and our identity, and as you can see here Global Design Studio is an international student centered distant learning environment/collaboration that has a focus upon humanitarian projects . Its intent is to expose students to design problems set within international contexts . Working with international teams of students, professionals and experts, the students develop solutions to real-world problems that directly affect communities around the world. This is our web site, our home and our identity, and as you can see here Global Design Studio is an international student centered distant learning environment/collaboration that has a focus upon humanitarian projects . 5. Footprint: Global Design Studio The following map illustrates where we have touched down. Our expansiveness is part of our strength. The arrows represent sites of active Global Design Studio participants as well as sites where Global Design Studio is currently working to develop footholds or projects. Our greatest contributors have been with the College of the North Atlantic in Newfoundland, Canada and Gadjah Mada University in Java, Indonesia. The following map illustrates where we have touched down. 6. Connecting: People and Expertise Global Design Studio connects students and cultures that have differing approaches to the design of communities. These differences are used to reinforce an examination of local construction and design methods that leads to a greater understanding of alternative solutions and differing cultural approaches. Global Design Studio also operates upon the notion that each partner brings their core competencies to projects. This allows for effective matching of tasks in a project to each school and avoids duplication of efforts.Global Design Studio connects students and cultures that have differing approaches to the design of communities. 7. Engaged/Immersive/Experiential Global Design pedagogy is based upon learning that is immersed in the culture and location of each project site. 8. Multi-Disciplines in Community Design Global Design Studio works in and for communities. Within these community projects are numerous opportunities for other disciplines. These are identified by the community and other disciplines within each institution are encouraged to become involved. The list on the left indicates the disciplines that have shown interest in our projects and/or have been actively involved to date.Global Design Studio works in and for communities. 9. The Design Continuum The following slides indicate how the Design Continuum can be used to organize and manage these large projects, both for the students and those guiding students through these exciting experiences. The following slides indicate how the Design Continuum can be used to organize and manage these large projects, both for the students and those guiding students through these exciting experiences.

    11. Pre-Design Branding (Business Cards, Shirts, Projects) Pre-Design is where the projects take their initial form. We make every effort to ensure that those involved are directly engaged and informed about the importance of excelling and representing each school within the Global Design Studio partnership. Each student is given a business card on the first day of classes and told that they are going to be project managers on a real project. Professionalism, rules of the road, and all the logistics of completing the project are discussed. Research assignments start the project off so that everyone is quickly orientated to the culture and the site. Specifically designed language courses are used to develop a basic understanding of the terms that will be used within each specific discipline. 12. Contract Documents Legal/Contract Responsibilities Accurate Reporting Student Binders Deliverables Pattern Books As the project comes to a close it is important to ensure that the project has been correctly documented and that everyone involved is aware of the type of deliverable that will be completed. Students at our institution (and several others)are required to submit binders that document all their work and correspondence on the project that can then be passed over to the client. As the project comes to a close it is important to ensure that the project has been correctly documented and that everyone involved is aware of the type of deliverable that will be completed. 13. Post-Design/Construction Post Surveys (Students and Client-Satisfaction) Reflection Activities Marketing Gather New Opportunities Sub-Contracting (St. Lucia Project) Presentations The Post-design stage allows for reflection that is a key component in service learning activities. New projects are identified and students are required to give presentations of their work to the clients. Sometimes, projects are extended beyond the initial contract such as our project in St. Lucia, where students have been hired as interior designers. The Post-design stage allows for reflection that is a key component in service learning activities. 16. Multi-Disciplinary Opportunities There are many stories to be told in each community. Whether it is about those who have reclaimed their homes, or the blackboard that comments on the day before the hurricane, there are many unwritten chapters of American history to be found here. There are many stories to be told in each community. 17. Local Industry Partners We have found it necessary to partner with local experts who ensure that work produced by sophomore students will be built. This is added value to our work as it becomes exceedingly real to these students that their work my show up on a street in another city in the world. We have found it necessary to partner with local experts who ensure that work produced by sophomore students will be built. 18. Current Projects: Broadmoor Our recent projects involve the renovation of a building into a youth leadership center and the development of designs for several houses in the Broadmoor community. Our recent projects involve the renovation of a building into a youth leadership center and the development of designs for several houses in the Broadmoor community.

    19. Partnership Amenities The Broadmoor community has a dormitory where students can come and work within the community and stay for reduced rates. This has prompted alternative spring break trips that are becoming very popular with students. The Broadmoor community has a dormitory where students can come and work within the community and stay for reduced rates. 22. Indonesian Post-Disaster We placed the students directly in the mix of the local discussions with NGO’s, community leaders, academics, and experts so that they gained multiple insights into post disaster construction. We placed the students directly in the mix of the local discussions with NGO’s, community leaders, academics, and experts so that they gained multiple insights into post disaster construction.

    23. Job Shadowing/Engaged/Experiential We also had the opportunity to directly follow the workers in the field. When we do this we always record our activities for use in the future. 24. Global Research Collaboration Striving to be all inclusive, we also work to forging intellectual pursuits with our colleagues . This serves to extend the partnership after the projects are completed and provide added value to the relationship.Striving to be all inclusive, we also work to forging intellectual pursuits with our colleagues . 25. OUTLINE : RECAP In summary, we have reviewed the adventures and components of Global Design Studio. This is a model that has worked well for us in the past four years and I offer it up as a holistic template can serve as a model for others interested in venturing into the exciting world of international education and service learning. In summary, we have reviewed the adventures and components of Global Design Studio.
