  3. NUI Awards in 2006 E J Phelan Fellowship: €51,000 €25,500 per annum over 2 years 10 Travelling Studentships: €42,000 €14,000 per annum over 3 years Thornton Scholarship: €4,500 award

  5. Awards for Graduates on offer in 2006 • 10 Travelling Studentships • Dr Mary L Thornton Scholarship in Education

  6. POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIP E.J. Phelan Fellowship in International Law • €51,000, i.e. €25,500 per annum, paid in instalments over two years • Tenable in any of the constituent universities of NUI

  7. OBJECTIVES OF THE FELLOWSHIP • To encourage and support a post-graduate student of proven academic excellence to advance his/her scholarly research in International Law • It is expected that the research undertaken will result in a substantial contribution to knowledge worthy of publication

  8. Who are eligible to enter? • Graduates of the National University of Ireland, holding a degree in Law, or other appropriate discipline, and who are interested in pursuing research in International Law

  9. To apply for theE.J. Phelan Fellowship you need • Application Form • Research Project • NUI institution and Department/School willing to take you on • Curriculum Vitae and certified Academic Transcript • Two referees

  10. Lodgement of Documents Six copies of • completed application form • summary of the Research Project • curriculum vitae • certified academic transcript • letter of support from the Head of Department in the Institution in which the candidate would wish to be based

  11. Selection Process • Review of written submissions • Possible shortlisting • Interview in late June/July

  12. Travelling Studentships • 10 Travelling Studentship €42,000 • 6 in the Humanities and Social Sciences (including Commerce/Business, Law) • 4 in the Sciences €14,000 per annum paid in quarterly instalments over three years

  13. NUI Travelling Studentship SchemeObjectives • To encourage the most able students in the NUI federal system to pursue research • To enable these students to undertake postgraduate research abroad, in the most reputable universities, towards a doctoral degree

  14. Who are eligible to enter? • Candidates must have obtained their primary degree in the National University of Ireland

  15. Additional Eligibility Requirements • Travelling Studentships in the Humanities and Social Sciences First Class Honours in - primary or - BA/BSocSc degree subject or - masters degree or Masters degree by Research • Travelling Studentships in the Sciences First Class Honours in primary or masters degree (or Second Class Honours in medical degree) or Masters degree by Research

  16. Travelling StudentshipsConditions • Other funding may be taken into account • Conduct research in approved venue (iii) Satisfactory six-monthly report from supervisor

  19. Selection Procedure • Proposals reviewed by two subject specialists • Shortlisting • Interview in late June/July

  20. Dr Mary L. Thornton Scholarship • Value €4,500 • Objective To encourage postgraduate research within NUI in the field of education

  21. Who are eligible to Enter? • Holders of NUI degrees intending to pursue educational research in NUI • Preference given to projects related to higher education research • Projects can be in any area of educational research

  24. Dr Mary L. Thornton Scholarship • Award of the Scholarship will be based on: • A detailed research proposal (ii) An Interview in late May/early June
