JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH • Quick History • Founded in 1974 (Volume 1) by the southern groups of marketing academics. • Purchased in 1978 by North Holland, now called Elsevier. • To keep pace with the volume of submissions, the number of issues per year has increased from 4 to 6 to 8 and now 12. • Starting in 2002, published in one volume, 12 issues (about 100-150 pages per issue). • JBR is associated with the Society for Marketing Advances and is a free benefit to its members.

  4. JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH • Aims and Scope • The JBR applies theory developed from business research to actual business situations. Recognizing the intricate relationships between the many areas of business, JBR examines a wide variety of business decisions, processes, and activities, within the actual business setting, covering theoretical and empirical advances in: • Buyer Behavior (Leon Schiffman) • Finance and Accounting (Emery Trahan) • International Business (Hans Mulbacher) • Strategic Management and Organizational Behavior (Jean McGuire) • Marketing (Barry Babin) • Business and Marketing Research (Abe Biswas) • Book Essays (Scarlett Wesley)

  5. JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH • Basic Facts • Electronic submissions are now required. • Average turnaround time is about 8 weeks (decision date - date manuscript received). • About 60-70% of manuscripts are rejected on the first round, the others are given the opportunity to revise and resubmit • Among the R&R group, about 2 out of 3 are submitted a second time. • Most manuscripts go through 2 to 3 rounds of reviews. • The overall acceptance rate is around 8%. • Once accepted, manuscript posted on Articles in Press (www.sciencedirect.com) and published within one year.

  6. JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH • Rankings/Impact • The JBR is consistently ranked in the top tier of marketing journals worldwide (using reputation or citation). • Ranked 8th in the Journal of Marketing Education (Spring 1997) study. • Impact factor in 2005 is 0.694 (Journal Citation Reports) • Ranked 12th worldwide, 9th by Europeans in the Marketing Letters (2002) study. • Every three months, Top 25 Hottest Articles (top25.sciencedirect.com), with archives to Jul-Sep 2004.

  7. JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH • Minor Issues in Publishing • Provide a cover letter in which you may indicate which area is best suited for your manuscript. • Thoroughly proof read your manuscript for typos and grammatical errors. • Make sure all pages are numbered, all tables and figures are included. • For review purposes, manuscripts of 30 double-space pages (all inclusive) are acceptable. • Once the paper is accepted, the limit is 7000 words (all inclusive). • Make sure abstract is a true reflection of the contents, but less that 150 words. • Avoid redundancies in the text/figures and eliminate footnotes.

  8. JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH • Major Issues in Publishing • Literature review should justify hypotheses and/or model. • Hypotheses should be properly stated. • Analysis should test hypotheses and/or model. • Interpretation and managerial implications are critical. • Make sure the first version you send is as good (in both form and format) as possible. • If given a chance to revise and resubmit (even if it is a risky one), take it and run with it. • Answer each point fully and carefully in writing to each reviewer and the Associate Editor. Be polite and considerate.

  9. JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK. Send inquiries, papers and special issue proposals to: laroche@jmsb.concordia.ca woodsiar@bc.edu
