  3. Characteristics • Small head • Long Whiskers • Long body and neck and short tails • Tail has a black tip

  4. Life Cycle The long-tailed weasels mate in the summer. The babies are born in the spring. These animals are born blind and only begin to open their eyes when they are weaned from their mothers. This happens when they are 36 days old.

  5. Life Cycle • The long-tailed weasels leave their mother when they are 8 weeks. • But only after she has taught them how to hunt!

  6. Diet • The long-tailed weasels are hunters. • Their diet is made up of small animals (moles, squirrels, chipmunks, etc.) • They eat 40% of their body weight each day!

  7. Habitats • Woodlands Farmland • Thickets

  8. Fun Facts • This animal turns completely white during winter except for eyes, nose and tail. • The male weighs twice as much as the female. • The egg develops 27 days before the animal is born. • The long tailed weasel is a swimmer, hunterand is known to be aggressive.

  9. History • Primarily nocturnal • Fearless and curious • Climb and swim well • Litter size between 4-9 • Life expectancy-1 year

  10. Tracks The shape of their feet help them climb trees quickly.

  11. Defense Mechanism • Strong, musk odor when alarmed • May stamp its feet when annoyed
