Lovinger, NSF Program Director Water makes it hydrophobic: 2wt% polymer surface modifier confers contraphilic wetting on conventional polyurethane. • New soft block yields surfaces that switch reversibly from hydrophilic (dry) to hydrophobic (wet) states. • Only 2wt% “blooms” to the surface (polymer surface modifier), making a conventional polyurethane surface contraphilic. • Mechanism: switched hydrogen bonding for soft block triads [2 semifluorinated and 1 hydantoin side chains]. • Contraphilic switching may prove useful in applications such as microfluidic devices for control of fluid streams. New soft block Left: Drop spreads (wets) dry surface. Right: Drop “beads up” on wet surface.

(Prof. Chujo) and Univ. of Pisa (Prof. Chiellini and Prof. Galli). • Collaborative international training in surface science for undergrads from Koç Univ. (Prof. Yilgor) • Panel member, October 06, the University of Richmond “Connect with Your Future”, to help undergraduate science students explore the diversity of career options in the sciences. Education: • Two Ph.D.’s: Dr. Janelle Uilk (Phillip Morris) and Dr. Umit Makal (Novion) • One post-doctoral: Professor Tomoko Fujiwara (Boise State U.) • Two REU undergrads: Mr. Carlos Williams; Ms. R. Wickham. • Three Ph.D. graduate students are being trained: Ms. Pinar Kurt (4th yr), Ms. Allison Mullins (3rd yr and Mr. Kennard Brunson (2nd yr).
