  2. Globalization • Definition: • The continual process of increasing connectivity between global societies, which results in… • the integration of economic markets • cultural diffusion • environmental change • increased political associations. What does this mean??? (put in your own words)

  3. Benefits • Globalization has improved the standard of living in many nations • Increased the level of economic development • More employment opportunities across the globe. CHINA In 1988, a median income in China was richer than only 10% of world population. 2008 the median was richer than one-half the world’s population. *Leapfrogged 40% of the world. “OLD RICH” Accepting New Members OLD: Western Europe, North America and Japan are all part of the global top 1 percentile. NEW: The richest 1% of Brazilians, Russians and South Africans now belong there, too.

  8. Challenges Presented by the Internet • Internet has allowed companies to operate in foreign nations & promotes cultural diffusion/ convergence • more cultural change • some cases causing loss of local culture

Trade Patterns • Resulted in outsourcing (movement of manufacturing jobs from the West to the East) • Due to fewer regulations and larger/cheaper workforce!!! • Increased globalization and free trade agreements (low tariffs) • Goods easily made in East/Southeast Asia sold throughout the world.
