  2. My Goal • : Improve my Communication Skills

  3. Specifically • Amount of non-essential information. • Prior to the main topic. • Decreased my involvement. • Became bored. • Had little or nothing to contribute.

  4. Anticipated Obstacles • Mistake Planning • consciously recognize when I’m becoming detached from the conversation. • remind myself to keep focused on what was being said. • refocus on the conversation by recognizing the differences in the way men and women communicate.

  5. Anticipated Obstacles • Difficult Situation Hierarchy • Environmental distraction • TV, Sporting Events, Working, etc.. • Physical and mental limitations • Tired, mornings, late night • Portions of subject matter • Non-relevant, not interesting

  11. Problem Behaviors • Assuming there will be lots of pointless information before the real topic is revealed. • Assuming the conversation will not commence logically. • Not be able to respond quickly when input to the conversation is required on my part.

  12. Antecedents • Opening phrases, What do you think about….. or how does this plan sound….. or do you have a minute? come to my office. • Thinking …..o boy… I’m not going to have anything to add…. then not responding quickly and appearing as if you don’t care.

  13. Practice • Listened to other conversations and mentally took part in the conversation as practice. • Mentally reviewed conversations by my role model. • Reviewed my Journal to rehearse the conversation using observations learned above.

  14. Revised Plan • Concentrate on listening • Suppress the urge to react to my antecedents • Maintain eye contact • Remove distractions • Ask for time to respond • Use reflective listening techniques • Focus on them not me.

Stepping Stones • Short-Term-Goal 1: • Change my overall communication style. • Short-Term Goal 2: • Begin using new communication style. • Short-Term Goal 3: • Evaluate, Adjust and improve each conversational style and begin to nail down new style. • Short-Term Goal 4: • Refine and strengthen my new conversation skills • Slowly allow distractions that previously would kill the conversation. 

  17. Stepping Stones • Short-Term-Goal 5: • Review my performance and identify what went well and improvement opportunities. • Short-Term Goal 6: • Realize and accept that effective communication is a skill that will not change quickly and has to be continually sharpened.
