  4. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES • a child grows up in poverty if: • The mother gave birth as a teen? • 2) The parents were unmarried when child was born? • 3) The mother didn’t receive a high school diploma? TEEN PREGNANCY and POVERTY ALL THREE 64% Any TWO 42% Any ONE 27% NONE 7%

  5. Only 51% of teen mothers have a high school diploma. Over 30% of teen girls cite teen pregnancy as a reason for dropping out. TEEN PREGNANCY and EDUCATION 2% of young teen mothers will obtain a college degree by age 30. Children of teen mothers are 50% more likely to repeat a grade.

  6. Because of Involvement of DLI Alum… MOVING TOWARDS ACTION AWARENESS OF ISSUE

  7. Making Connections = Increasing Awareness

  8. What else have we been doing? • Created a postcard series (Core 84) so constituents could show they are part of the Core 84% of South Carolinians who support comprehensive sex education. More than 365 postcards have been sent to elected Legislators and Superintendents. • DLI alumni have been hosts of our annual fundraiser and awareness event at Pearlz in Columbia: Rhonda Midgette, Clare Folio Morris, Charles Weathers, Lee Pearson, and Alan Cooper. • In 2012, Mayor Steve Benjamin declared May Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month in the City of Columbia.  • SC Campaign staff presented to Greenwood Rotary Club (85 people) because of Richard Whiting.  • Alan Cooper interviewed Forrest for his publications – Midlandsbiz.com, Upstatebiz.com, and LowCountrybiz.com, which reached 12,000 people across the state. • Andy Brackhas covered the issue of teen pregnancy prevention in the Statehouse Report multiple times. • Howard Boyd and Stewart Spinxsponsored a breakfast in Greenville County for community leaders.

  9. Where do we go from here? • Continue to advocate for implementation of age-appropriate, research proven sex education in our public schools. • Become part of the “CORE 84” • Continue to raise awareness of this issue and encourage communities to move to action! • Do you have a community group we can speak to?

  31. RESEARCH TELLS US… • *Reading and literacy are foundational to school and life success; • Early reading aloud makes a difference. • Exposure to words in books at a very young age • can change the achievement trajectory for • students (Hart & Risley, Meaningful Differences, 1995); • Independent reading matters. • As few as 15 minutes per day has been shown to • impact reading achievement (response to National Reading • Panel, 2004); • * Poverty affects both early reading in the home, as • well as access to books for independent reading. LIVI’s LIBRARY: Building readers one child at a time

  32. OUR OWN SC RESEARCH TELLS US … • *Children born into conditions where the following risk factors are present are more likely to experience school failure by age 9: • 1 in 5 children in SC lives in poverty; 4 in 10 of these children are NOT successful by grade 3 • 1 in 4 children in SC is born to a mother with less than a high school education; these children are nearly TWICE as likely to experience early school failure • 1 in 8 children in SC is born to a teen mother; nearly 40% of these children are low achievers by age 9 • 3% of children in SC suffer from abuse or neglect before age 3; 52% of these children are unsuccessful by grade 3

  33. SUCCESSFUL LITERACY and EARLY READING INITIATIVES … *Meet families and children where they go every day (school, child care, doctor, church, library); *Should focus on early childhood and primary reading to have the greatest effect on student achievement; *Need to be sustainable and not “one time events;” *Are relationship-based and locally-driven; should be “glued together” to reach families effectively.

  34. “Sharing Livi’s love of reading”

  35. You can help. The idea is so simple… • Through community partnerships, Livi’s Library collects gently-used, high quality children’s books for children birth to age 12. • Volunteers sort and host “free book fairs” at schools and preschools; or place Livi’s Library bookcases in areas where our most vulnerable children and families are served. • Each child selects two free books to take home and keep, building her independent reading collection.

  36. JOIN US • One SC and Livi’s Library • Successes 2012-2013 • DLI alums and partners have collected over 20,000 books for children! (200% of our GOAL!) • DLI alums and partners have gathered over 300 volunteers and 76 partner organizations and established 3 Livi’s Library Chapters (2 added chapters in development). • Livi’s Library filed a 501(C)(3) application and is a registered non-profit organization with the SC Secretary of State. Since February 2012:
