Hoyas Homework • Homework Components: • Spelling: Spelling Choice • Math: Skills practice pages • RW: reteach • PW: practice • EW: enrichment • Science/Social Studies: varies depending on the unit • Language Arts: review of lesson taught that day • Reading Log: will be stamped at the end of the week • Vocabulary: will be content specific (social studies, science, or math)

Second Grade Standards • Language Arts • Word Analysis, Fluency & Vocabulary=34% • Reading Comprehension=23% • Literary Response & Analysis=9% • Written Conventions=22% • Writing Strategies=12% • Mathematics • Number Sense=58% • Algebra & Functions=9% • Measurement & Geometry=22% • Statistics, Data Analysis & Probability=11%

  12. Book Reports • Book Reports • Required • 4 times per year (October, January, March, May) • Different options (PowerPoint, video, poster, etc.) • Must choose a different option for each report

Test & Grading • Tests will be announced in advance • Weekly tests: spelling& language arts • Study guides will be provided for content areas • Grading: • A: Advanced 90-100% • B: Proficient 80-89% • C: Basic 70-79% • D: Below Basic 60-69% • F: Far-Below Basic 0-59% • Tests from the previous week will be sent home for you to review and sign on Tuesdays. Please make sure your Hoya returns his/her test folder each Wednesday.

Tips for 2nd Grade Reading Comprehension • EXPOSITORY(non-fiction) text is important. • Newspapers, Animals, weather, famous people, careers, etc. • Have your students come up with a cause and the effect from the story. • Ask them questions about what they read. • Tell me in your own words what happened in the story. • Give me an example of how the characters act. • Describe what happens at the end of the story.

  15. Donations/Volunteers • Chapter Books: Magic Treehouse, Junie B. Jones, etc.  • Vis a Vis pens, tub of licorice, treasure chest items • Sign up for a time you would like to volunteer. • Specific ways to volunteer: • University Parent • Science Lab • Computer Lab • P.E. • Art Masters • Game Room • Multiple Intelligence activities at recess

  17. Birthdays All of my students are important to me and will be recognized on their special day. I have special treats for my students and as a class we sing “Happy Birthday”. Please respect OPA policy and remember that snacks, treats and goodie bags are not allowed.

  18. JIJI Orientation Make sure to go visit Honour Hall to learn about Jiji Math!  There is now a JiJi app that is available for download.

  19. OPA World Language Objective: Students will Acquire Fluency In at Least One Foreign Language

  20. 2013 World Language ModelIncreasing Fluency One Year at a Time To achieve this objective, instruction time must increase, effective teachers must be employed, as well as continuation of target language. MANDARIN REQUIRES 3X INSTRUCTION TIME AS WESTERN LANGUAGES Introduce Mandarin to young learners – gradually increase instructionGive option in 5th grade to continue or focus on Western Language of Choice TK-4 MANDARIN INSTRUCTION: (3 TIMES/WK X 30 MIN) 5-7* MANDARIN OR WESTERN INSTRUCTION (3 TIMES/WK X 45 MIN) 2013 - 8TH FRENCH INSTRUCTION 2014 - 5-8* WILL MAKE LANGUAGE CHOICE
