  3. Energy Case Study

  4. Effective Air Barrier Construction

  5. Integrated Building Solutions What does “integrated” building solutions mean? CONNECTIVITY

  6. Integrated Building Solutions • Connectivity: • It’s not about the window or wall but how they come together! • It’s about addressing issues like sequence of installation and compatibility. • It has always been about bridging the gap between similar or dissimilar substrates. • It’s about being “uniquely” positioned to address the matter of integrated solutions.

  7. What causes air flow into and out of the building enclosure? STACK PRESSURE FAN PRESSURE WIND PRESSURE WIND PRESSURE ( UNDER SUCTION ) STACK PRESSURE

  8. Start with Basics What is an Air Barrier? A system of construction components – part of the building enclosure – designed, installed and integrated in such a manner as to stop the uncontrolled flow of air into and out of the building enclosure. 100% continuity is critical to performance.

  9. What is a Water Barrier? A material designated to prevent or retard the flow of liquid water through a building assembly. Substantial discontinuities are permissible as long as water can shed (kinetic flow) downward and out of the building. Start with Basics

  10. What is a Vapor Barrier? A material designated to prevent or retard the flow – through molecular diffusion – of water vapor through building materials and assemblies (water vapor permeance). General continuity is important but seams, transitions, and laps need not be sealed. Start with Basics

  11. Uncontrolled air flow has the ability to transport ~30 to 200 times more moisture than via vapor diffusion.

  12. Effects of Air Infiltration

  13. Summary • Communication • Design Review • Multiple Mockups • Training • Preconstruction Meeting • Third Party Testing • Specifications are critical • Integrated Approach
