  3. Introduction toPersonal Case Discussions Three roles: • Case writer • Case Discussion Leader • Team Everyone will participate in each of these roles

  4. Case Discussion Goals • Help the case-writer reflect on and learn from a leadership challenge or experience • Help the discussion leader refine his/her facilitation skills to maximize the learning and usefulness for case-writer. • Developing a clear agenda • Managing the discussion • Bringing the conversation to tangible insights and ideas. • Help the team members refine their coaching and feedback skills: clarity and relevance (“being heard”)

  5. Case Discussion Responsibilities Before day of case discussion • L: Discusses case with case writer. Reviews and tailors case discussion flow Case Discussion Flow • W: Summarizes Leadership Challenge, what s/he hopes to learn (5) • L: Facilitates team discussion of case, using attached questions (40) • W: Summarizes, shares overall impressions about discussion (5) • All: Fill out feedback forms (5)

  6. Discussion Flow: Questions to discuss • What leadership approaches or practices did you observe? • What was the connection between what the person was saying and feeling? • What was at stake for the case-writer? What were her/his goals? Were there other needs at work?

  7. Discussion Flow: Questions to discuss • What is the pattern of inquiry and advocacy? • What was effective in the leader’s dialogue and why? • What was not effective in the leader’s dialogue and why? • What counsel would you give the leader?

Role of Effective Team Member • Offer support, responsiveness, caring, balance of advocacy/inquiry • Stay focused on what the case writer needs and wants, not what you have to say! • Assist the team in staying on track • Be open and honest, but sensitive and tactful • Be patient: all learning may not happen now

Next Steps • Case writers • Revise case or clarify if needed • Team: • Determine sequence, roles. • Fill out planner; turn in tonight. • Determine ground rules and how to work together as a team • Team leaders for case #1: • Discuss case with case writer, clarify challenge and learning and tailor agenda • Team members: - Read case #1 prior to next week’s class.
