  1. PATT PATT Program for Avanserte Tele-Tjenester (Program for Advanced Telecom Services)

  2. Høyhastighetsnett Gløshaugen-Tyholt PATT Vision • University • NTNU Rolv Bræk, ITEM Delvis: Vidar Faltinsen/ITEA, Arne Sølvberg/IDI Styringsgruppe: A virtual centre of excellence in research on advanced heterogeneous services and fast service development, established as a mutually beneficial collaboration between partners from industry, university and telecom-operators. centre of excellence • Operator • Telenor FoU • Telenor Nett • Telenor Mobil Frode Flægstad • Industry • Ericsson • Compaq Oddvar Risnes Geir Melby Stig Magne Olsen Lasse Finsaas Tor Arne Bellika Sjur Malm Telenor Konsern: Alf Nilsen

  3. What are “advanced” ”heterogeneous” services? “Advanced” means a combination of: • traditional telecom-services • multimedia services • web- and information services • messaging services • location and context aware services “heterogeneous” means: • services over heterogeneous networks: PSTN, IP, GSM, UMTS • and services provided by different service providers: Telenor, Teletopia, …(standards are missing in this area)

  4. PATT goals Result goals: • A common service platform with open interfaces and access to a heterogeneous set of access and core networks • Service architectures and service execution frameworks that enable fast development and modular deployment/withdrawal of reliable heterogeneous services • A portfolio of differentiated services • Contributions to standardisation of OSA and Parlay • A methodology for rapid service creation • A testbed for interoperability

  5. PATT goals Effect goals, achieving: • Competitive advantages • Early experiences with heterogeneous platforms and services • Increased pace of innovation through service experiments (students and others can rapidly design, deploy and gain usage feedback from new services ) • Mutual understanding of problems and solutions • Better standards • Improved recruiting base through better education

  6. Possible research topics • How to deal with several service providers: • E.g. who owns the users • How can services from different providers be combined? • How to handle several heterogeneous network legs in the same call? • Multimedia control • Mobility of users, terminals and services • Service execution frameworks • Principles for service modularity and dynamic deployment withdrawal • Principles for user interactions over heterogeneous networks and terminals, XML, IVR, WAP, … • Make once – run everywhere; utopia or reality? • User acceptance studies on new services • Etc …

  9. Methodology SCE SEF A system of methods for rapid and safe service development and deployment • Service modeling method using Roles, MSC, state types, • Object modeling method using SDL-2000, UML, … • Service and role composition: Composite states, actors, … • Service validation • Dynamic service deployment and withdrawal • Feature interaction detection and avoidance Portal/ app server Database ParlayClient

  10. Service Creation Environments (SCE) SCE SCE … are toolsets that support methods for service specification, design, implementation and validation (including simulators): • Compaq SCE based on Visual Café • Ericsson service MDK • research toolset SEF SEF Portal/ app server ParlayClient Database ParlayClient

  11. Service Execution Frameworks (SEF) SCE SEF … provide functionality common to many services and simplify service design and deployment. Services are implemented as applications of the frameworks, and it is important that services can be added and withdrawn as flexibly and safely as possible: • Compaq SEF • Ericsson Service Modeling Development Kit • Experimental/research SEF Portal/ app server Database ParlayClient

  12. Experimental services SCE SEF Specification, design, implementation, deployment and use of experimental services featuring: • Personal mobility • Session mobility • Multimedia • Personal agents • Portals • Location and context aware services Using students to invent, create and experiment with new services Parlay Client Portals/etc

  13. Heterogeneity and interoperability SEF SEF Database Portal/ App. server Parlay Client Parlay Client PATT provides a test-bed for detailed studies and tests of inter-operability and conformance involving: • Heterogeneous Parlay servers • Heterogeneous Parlay clients • Multiple service providers • Heterogeneous networks • Heterogeneous terminals Results to be fed-back into standardization Parlay Server Parlay Server

  15. Domain description Establish a common frame of reference by making a domain description. This is not a main effort but a systematic collection of information (maintained as web pages) including: • Concepts and terminology (e.g. what is a service, feature, call, leg, …), • Principles, approaches and lessons learned: (e.g. TINA, IN, Parlay, OSA,…) • Problems: what is difficult and what is impossible • Identification of needs and research goals • Trends • Bibliography
