Unit 2, Day 1 • Copy the following vocabulary words: • Determination- a quality that makes you continue trying to do or achieve something that is difficult. • Perseverance- the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult. • Survive- to remain alive; to continue to live. • Foreshadow- to give a hint of something that has not yet happened. • Hatchet- a small ax that has a short handle.

  3. Unit 2, Day 1 Compound Subjects and Predicates • Grammar Workbook Pages 53-54 • Guided Practice: 1-10 pg. 53 & 1-8 pg. 54 • Utry: 11-20 & 9-18 pg. 54

  4. Unit 2, Day 2 • Warm-up: Write each sentence using the correct form of the verb in parentheses. Then underline the compound subjects once and the compound predicates twice. • Grace and Erin (is, are) twins. • Either Brad or Zak (feed, feeds) and (walks, walk) the dogs. • Both whales and dolphins (breathes, breath) air. • The teacher or the children (clean, cleans) the board. • Alex (writes, write) the paragraph and (draws, draw) the pictures.

  9. Unit 2, Day 3 • Warm-up: Copy the sentences. Underline the subjects once and the predicates twice. Some sentences may have compound subjects and/or compound predicates. • Food and dishes filled the tables. • Hot dogs and hamburgers sizzled on the grill. • They left the party and headed home. • The cat opened its mouth and yawned. • Alicia and Consuelo went to the store and bought milk.

  10. Unit 2, Day 3 • Hatchet by: Gary Paulsen • Look at the cover of the book. What kind of book do you think this is? Do you think it will be interesting? • Read Chapters 1 & 2 • Foreshadowing: a suggestion of something that has not yet happened. • What are some examples of foreshadowing from the text today? • Whose point of view is the story told from? • This novel is narrated in the third person; however, the narrator conveys all of Brian Robeson's thoughts and feelings through the events in the novel.

  12. Unit 2, Day 4 • Read Chapters 3 & 4 of Hatchet. • What is Figurative Language? • Smartboard lesson on Figurative Language. • Find an example of personification, simile, and metaphor in the chapters we’ve read so far.

  13. Unit 2, Day 5 • Warm-up: Study vocabulary, compound subjects and predicates. • Assessment • Turn in test and answer sheet. • Read Library book or write.
