  5. Aims of today’s talk • To familiarise you with some key aspects of secondary school education in England • To introduce some important areas of debate • To illustrate some useful terms and acronyms • BUT: this will inevitably only be a taster; please refer to other sources for more detail

  6. What do youalreadyknow? • Talk to your neighbour about what you know of the following in English schools: • Pupils’ ‘typical’ school day • Daily work of a teacher • Staffroom • Cover/ ‘free’ periods

  7. Compulsory education in England lasts for 11 years • Do you know? • At what age pupils start school? • At what age pupils can leave school? • Answers • The start of the term after their 5th birthday. • The last Friday of June of the school year in which they reach 16.

  8. What about secondary schools? • How are they organised? • How are they financed? • Are there different types?

  20. Pupils or students and teachers • Referred to as both pupils and students, dependent on the school • Most schools refer to pupils by their first name • A few schools allow pupils to call teachers by their first name

Assessment of learning Pupils are assessed by National Curriculum Tests at the end of each Key Stage: • Key Stage 1 assessments are taken at age 7 • Key Stage 2 assessments are taken at age 11 • Key Stage 3 assessments are taken at age 14 • Key Stage 4 is assessed by levels of achievement in National Qualifications such as GCSE, GNVQ Diplomas etc. • Key Stage 5 is not compulsory but is also assessed by National Qualifications such as AS, A2, GNVQ etc.

The Curriculum • The National Curriculum (implemented in 1989, updated in 2000 and 2009) • The new National Curriculum • NC is statutory • KS3 National Strategy (now the Secondary Strategy) – introduced in 2001 • This is non-statutory, but recommended • The 14-19 curriculum • Entry level, GCSE, vocational GCSE • A’ Level (AS/A2, Vocational A’ Level, AEA)
