Native Americans were viewed in various ways by the European culture that conquered them, either as “noble innocents” exhibiting many signs of an advanced civilization, or as “brute savages” who lead a harsh and violent life. • Supply evidence for both the “innocent” and “savage” using what you know about the Aztec civilization.

  4. Brute Savages • Human sacrifice • Clothing or lack of clothing • Weapons • warlike

  5. Contact between the Spanish & the Indians • Conquistadors • bring gold and riches back to Spain • acquire territory • Missionaries • convert the Indians to Christianity • Colonists • use the Indians as slave labor

Essay 200-250 words • Adopt the point of view of Father Serra • Writing to the King of Spain (Philip II) • Explain the importance of religion in settling the new world and activities of the mission • Include 3 activities on the mission • (religious services, education, farming, and protection)
