  2. Life beyond high school • College-4 year, 2 year • Military-contact a recruiter • Work • Apprenticeship-on the job training w/ classroom work, skilled trade. • Electricians, plumbers, welders, pipefitters, HVAC, mechanics, carpenters

  3. Things to consider • Career goals-big picture, how much education do you NEED, match college/major, job market. • GPA/ACT scores-be realistic about possibilities, preparedness for college. • Financial situation-what’s it going to cost, what can YOU afford, remember…..college is an investment.

College options • Two year technical school • Associate’s degree • Four year public school • Bachelor’s degree and beyond (Master’s/Doctorate) • Four year private school • Bachelor’s degree and beyond (Master’s/Doctorate) • 2 + 2 Option • Two year technical school + two year public/private school

What should you be doing now???? • Taking the ACT: September, October, December • Check schools for scholarship requirements • Making a list of colleges you are interested in attending-explore college websites. • Meeting with college admissions counselors: college visits (2 days), rep visits (Sept-Nov). -College Fair @ OSUM-Sept. 24 5:30-7:30pm

ACT • ACT-register online, take w/ writing at least once, October test registration deadline-Sept. 19 • Some schools require scores to be sent directly from ACT (Cincy, OSU, Miami, Findlay, Heidelberg, Dayton, etc.) • Perfect 36 • Ave. scores-National 20.9, Ohio 21.8, Pleasant 21.7 • Scholarship $-varies by school • College Readiness Scores • English 18, Math 22, Reading 22, Science 23

  8. admissions • RIGOR OF CLASSES. • Advanced courses, core classes beyond the minimum requirement. • Math is a predictor of success @ college level, if you are not taking one, it will be questioned. • Grades/GPA in those classes. • ACT score. • Class rank.

  9. Consider • Near or far from home. • Large or small school. • Rural or urban setting. • Admissions requirements-can you get in? • Academics-do they have your major? • Tuition costs-how do plan to pay for college? • Financial aid/scholarship opportunities/work study.

  10. October to February • Check college websites for application deadlines. • Scholarships/Honors Programs-many are Nov. 1st or Dec. 1st • Regular admission-most are Feb. 1st • OSUM-Alber Scholarship deadline Dec. 1st • Apply and pay application fee online. • Notify Mrs. Webb so a transcript can be sent.

January through March • Apply for the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)-Jan. 1, 2015. • Necessary for scholarships, college financial aid • Talk to college financial aid departments after applying. • Apply for scholarships: guidance website, parents’ workplace, etc. • Big $ will come from universities, others are 1 year scholarships ranging from $500-$2,000.

Scholarship Information • Scholarships that run through PHS are posted on the guidance website as they become active (January-early May). • Marion Community Foundation Scholarships offer over 25 various scholarships for PHS students (due mid-March). • Parents must be a member of the PTO, Athletic Boosters, Music Boosters to be eligible for those particular scholarships. • Essays are VERY important. Take the time to write them. If someone told you they would give you $1,000 to write a 20 minute essay, would you do it????!!!!! • Scholarships do not necessarily go to the top students…..PLEASE APPLY!!!! Do not assume another student is going to get it instead of you!!!! • Seek out scholarships from your parents’ workplace (Nucor, Whirlpool, etc.), church, and other groups in which you may be active (Boy Scouts, etc.).

  14. OSU-Marion • Alber Scholarship: • Marion county residents are first priority. • OSUM 1st choice on application, 2.5 minimum GPA = $1,500 scholarship • Higher GPA and class rank…..scholarship $ may range from $2,000-$3,500 • Dean’s Scholarship-Full Tuition • Must apply by December 1st!!!!!

  17. March-May • Continue applying for scholarships. • Evaluate financial aid packages-mid March. • Make a decision and notify college by May 1st.

Letters of recommendation • Notify teachers, Mr. Sparling, Mr. Ballinger, and/or me well ahead of the deadline!!!!! • Give teachers information regarding academics, activities, community service, future plans, and description of the scholarship. • Any recommendation requests sent via email…..give teachers a heads up that they will be receiving a request.

  20. graduation • June 7, 2015 2pm • Honors Diploma-(guidance website), determined the week before graduation, no $ attached, sticker on diploma. • Ballinger Scholar-must earn all As during senior year (includes PSEO classes). • Valedictorian-must have a minimum of 130 quality points. • Honor Student-Cumulative GPA of 3.5 and above.

  21. Community service • What? • Voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area. • How much? • A minimum of 5 hours per school year. • Why? • The spirit of giving….helping those in need, kindness, treating others as you would like to be treated. • Resume builder for college, work, scholarships….sets you apart from others. • NHS senior inductions are Oct. 16th. • Networking with new people….school, job, career opportunities.
