After 30 years War focus shifts from Germany to southern area of the Balkans • Elimination of Protestantism created religious unity • Rising serfdom in empire • Turks try to capture Vienna in 1683 • By 1715, Austria held the former Spanish Netherlands, Austria, Silesia, and Bohemia, along with Sardinia and Naples Austrian-Hungarian Empire

Ruled by Hohenzollern • Land owning nobility known as Junkers • Frederick William (1620-1688) creates a professional army • Prussia becomes a military state • Frederick William I transforms army • Recruits tall boys and has special soldiers known as Grenadiers – had to be at least 6 feet tall • Junkers are given command of troops Prussia
