  1. Warmup9/30/13 Can paraphrasing ever be a bad thing? Objective Tonight’s Homework To learn how to write notes more quickly Finish writing your shorthand cheat sheet and put it in your binder

  2. Notes on Shorthand Shorthand is useful in many professions and there are many different specialized ways of doing it. In essence, though, shorthand is just a way of rewriting long words with short symbols so you don’t waste time just writing.

  3. Notes on Shorthand SYMBOL e.g. w/ w/o … b/c  etc. N/A WHAT IT REPRESENTS “for example” “with” “without” “therefore” When something continues or keeps going. Maybe on the next line. “because” when something becomes something else or leads to something else “etcetera”. When there are more things similar to the one discussed “Not Applicable”. When something doesn’t work for a situation or matter • • •

  4. Notes on Shorthand There are many more symbols for shorthand, but the big idea is that if you can shorten a word, cut something out, or make something shorter, do it. Bullet points are also good ways of showing what things are part of other things. Let’s do a few examples as a class.

  5. Notes on Shorthand “Education is the developing of character, knowledge, and skills for a desired purpose. Most educators would agree that education should prepare the student to function well throughout life. But secularists and Christians disagree on their definitions of the word well. What is the core of Christian education—that without which education is not Christian at all?”

  7. Notes on Shorthand “Research during the past 10 years, powered by technology such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, has revealed that young brains have both fast-growing synapses and sections that remain unconnected. This leaves teens easily influenced by their environment and more prone to impulsive behavior, even without the impact of souped-up hormones and any genetic or family predispositions.”

  9. Making A Shorthand System As you can see from our quick notes today, shorthand is really useful. Your job for the rest of class is to look over some of your classwork for other classes (you can go to your locker if necessary) and come up with any other shorthand you may need. Write all your shorthand symbols on a list. Try them out on notes from other classes and see if they work well at summarizing. With the last 10 minutes of class, share your shorthand with neighbors. See if there’s anything on theirs you want to copy down. Keep your list and use it!

  10. Exit Question #19 What does mean? a) “therefore” b) “because” c) “with” d) “without” e) “for example” f) None of the above • • •
