  2. Evolution Evidence – Textbook 5.3 • Evidence from Anatomy • The structures of many different creatures are the same. E.g. forearms of mammals. • Homologous features – similar structures but different functions • Analogous features – similar appearance have similar functions, different evolutionary origin • Eg. Different species have different functions for the similar bone structure of their forelimbs (pg.144)

  3. There is also a relationship between the embryonic states of many creatures….?

  4. Vestigial Features and Anatomical Oddities • Vestigial features are rudimentary structures that have no useful function. (almost all creature have this) • One explanation is that these features were once used in our past when our ancestors needed them • Some snakes and whales have hip and legs (walked on 4 limbs…?

  5. The shells of crabs and turtles serve similar purposes. Are they homologous or analogous traits? • Would you consider human body hair to be a vestigial feature? • What about the human appendix? • Tonsils?

  6. Evidence from Biochemistry • Proteins & other molecules in mammals, birds and frogs are examined • The species that are more similar have molecules that are similar.

  7. DNA similarities The milk producing base sequences of DNA from 5 mammals. The coloured bases indicate genetic changes shared by more than one species. What do you see (how similar are mammals)? Homologous and vestigial genes in the DNA of all species…?

  8. Evidence from Biochemistry • Artificial selection occurs when humans select the breeding individuals in order to get desired traits. • Humans have takenthe sea cabbage and through selective breeding have created all the plants in the picture.

  9. Homework… Read Beginnings chp. 9 and 10 and write a ½ to 1 page response (single spaced) for each and turnitin.com Quiz tomorrow on textbook chp. 5
