  1. LMS Selection Project Inaugural meeting of STAC, 20 January 2010 Andrea Chappell, Director of ITMS in IST, on behalf of the project team

  2. LMS Selection Project Big Picture • ANGEL, of Angel Learning Inc., was sold to Blackboard Inc. in May 2009. • Need to select new LMS to replace ANGEL (UW-ACE). • Determine timeframe for migration. • Two phases: • Evaluation of options, and recommendation of a (very) short list. • Pilot/evaluation of short list with faculty and student input, for final selection.

  3. Project progress • Team (ITMS, CTE, CEL (formerly DCE), OPD, Library, 2 faculty members, and … STAC for students!) • 6 team meetings in fall 2009, 1 meeting 2010 • Charter, Investigating options, Investigating needs • 3 fall subgroup meetings: Determining criteria • Using workflow scenarios, not just feature lists • Sandboxes for “known 4”

  4. Just Some of the Criteria • Course Administration, Assessments, Teams, Online Discussions, Gradebook, Assignments, Course content, Communications and Collaborations, System Administration, Infrastructure Integration, Accessibility, Standards compliance, Adaptability/ Programmability/ Automation, …

  5. Timing • Upgrade to V7.4 in April, supported by Bb until 2012 • Future V8.x (transition release), support to 2014 • Current scenario: • Run V7.4 until 2012 • Pilot next LMS in late in 2010 • Run next LMS in parallel in 2011-2012 for migration (volunteers, encouraged, forced) • Other factors (like ANGEL support) may alter timing

  6. What are the options? • Choose another commercial LMS • Two biggest are Blackboard and Desire2Learn • Others include: eCollege, Atutor, SharePoint, … • Choose an open LMS • Two biggest are Moodle and Sakai • Others include: ELGG, LON-CAPA, … • Go Web 2.0 – Use FB, Wiki, Blog, Twitter, ... • Not practical on own, but want to incorporate

  7. “Open” – what does it mean? • Open source • Access to the end product source code • Generally royalty-free • Generally has a large community of peer support • Moodle and Sakai are free, but need to assess whether additional local or purchased support required • Can purchase support and also hosting from 3rd party vendors (Unicon, rSmart, Longsight)

  8. What are others selecting? Look at … • Overall market share of the LMSes • Adoption trends • http://www.deltainitiative.com/picts/pdf/deltainitiativelmswebinar09-2.pdf - August 2009 • Recent LMS selection results • http://www.masmithers.com/2009/09/20/public-lms-evaluations/ - September 2009

  9. Recent LMS Selection Results • North Carolina Community College System • Chose Moodleover BlackBoard - August 2009 • McMaster University • Chose BlackBoard - April 2008 • Guelph • Chose Desire2Learn(already using in their distance dept) • Laurier is in RFP process right now • Desire2Learn or BlackBoard

  10. Next steps • Create RFP (Request For Proposals) • Ask vendors how they support important scenarios and critical features • Initial testing on product sandboxes • Provide information to campus info, get feedback • Leads to … Recommendation to UCIST, and pilot

  11. Some questions for the project • What are the important things our LMS should do? • Teams heavily used, combined courses, instructional resources repository, etc. • Open/community source differences? • Consider “hosted” service? Pros and cons • Expectations of campus input into selection? • To avoid “personal preference” feedback, expect to involve campus in the very short list

  12. How might STAC get involved? • Need student (and faculty, and staff) input. • Project narrows choices based on needs (current use, previous feedback), supportability, scalability, etc. • Involve greater campus in organized evaluation of a (very) short list of candidates … STAC help here! Also, suggest (but welcome other options) … • STAC member take part in project, or .. • Assign another “interested” student as rep
