(Genesis 28) • Jacob sought a wife from his own people. (Genesis 29) • Jacob was greatly blessed when he labored in Laban’s house. (Genesis 30:43) • Jacob relied on God’s protection when returning to the promised land. (Genesis 32:8-12) • Jacob strove with an angel all night(Hos. 12:4) because he sought God’s blessing. (Genesis 32:24-32)

  2. Jacob Had Problems in His Household • Simeon and Levi murdered the men of Shechem for defiling Dinah (Genesis 34) • Reuben lay with Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid. (Genesis 35:22) • The older sons despised Joseph and would not speak to him on “friendly terms”. (Genesis 37:4) • The older sons sold Joseph into slavery (Genesis 37) and lied to their father. • Judah married a Canaanite woman (Genesis 38:1-5) and Judah later went into Tamar like a prostitute (Genesis 38)

  3. Jacob Struggled Greatly Because of His Children’s Sins • Jacob would not be consoled when he thought Joseph was dead (Genesis 37:35) • Jacob was fearful of retribution when Simeon and Levi murdered the men of Shechem. (Genesis 34:30) • Jacob never forgot how Reuben defiled his bed. (Genesis 49:4) Jacob Is Not Alone Is He? It is not an uncommon thing for good parents to raise children who make bad decisions or forget the Lord all together.

  4. God has given parents comfort in His word that can help hurting parents in hard times. • Jeremiah 8:22--  Is there no abalm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? bWhy then has not the 1health of the daughter of my people 2been restored?

  5. HELP FOR HURTING PARENTS • YOU ARE NOT ALONE

  6. You Are Not Alone • Jacob was a man of faith, but his household had their vices. • Genesis 31:34; 35:2,22; 38:14-16; • Eli was a man of faith, but his sons were immoral. • 1 Samuel 2:12-17, 23-25; • Samuel was a righteous judge of Israel, but his sons perverted justice and took bribes. • 1 Samuel 8:1-6; • David was a man after God’s own heart, but raised rebellious children. • 1 Samuel 13; 15ff; 1 Kings 1; • You Are Not Alone: • There are other parents who have tossed and turned on their beds throughout a sleepless night. • There other parents who have cried buckets full of tears until there were no more tears to cry. • There are other parents who have cried out to God in agony in the middle of the night on behalf of wayward, stubborn, hardhearted children, seemingly to no avail. • 1 Peter 5:8-9—aBe of sober spirit, bbe on the alert. Your adversary, cthe devil, prowls around like a roaring dlion, seeking someone to devour. 9 1aBut resist him, bfirm in your faith, knowing that cthe same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your 2brethren who are in the world. Today children who are raised in good Christian homes: Leave the Lord for denominationalism. Engage in drunkenness Engage in immorality Do not respect or glorify God

  7. HELP FOR HURTING PARENTS • YOU ARE NOT ALONE • YOU ARE NOT NECESSARILY RESPONSIBLE

  8. Parent’s Actions Do Affect Their Children • Jacob was at least partially responsible for the strife in his house. (Genesis 37:3-4) • Perhaps Jacob’s toleration of idols led to a lowering of his children’s standards. (Genesis 35:2, 22) • Eli certainly played a part in his sons’ disobedience. (1 Samuel 3:13-14)

  9. We Can Adversely Affect Our Children: • By failing to discipline • Proverbs 19:18—Discipline your son while there is hope, And do not desire 1his death. • Proverbs 29:15—  The arod and reproof give wisdom, But a child who gets his own way bbrings shame to his mother. • 1 Samuel 3:13-14— “For aI have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for bthe iniquity which he knew, because chis sons brought a curse on themselves and dhe did not rebuke them. 14 “Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that athe iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”

  10. We Can Adversely Affect Our Children: • By failing to teach • Judges 2:7-11—The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who 1survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 8 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten. 9 And they buried him in the territory of ahis inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10 All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who adid not know the Lord, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel. How Did This Happen? Parents fail to teach (Deut. 6:6-10) Priests stop reading the Law (Lev. 10:11) Elders stop demanding parents and priest perform their duty.

  11. Proverbs 22:6—Train up a child 1in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. • Proverbs 10:27— The afear of the Lord prolongs 1life, But the byears of the wicked will be shortened. • Proverbs 16:7-- When a man’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, He amakes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

  12. We Can Adversely Affect Our Children: • By failing to set the proper example: • Jacob failed to keep his commitments. (Genesis 28:16-22; 35:1-7) • David failed to set a good example before his sons. (2 Samuel 11-12) • David coveted what was not his: Bathsheba. • David committed adultery with her. • David murdered her husband to cover it up. • David’s sons: • Amnon saw, coveted and took his half-sister Tamar. • Absalom tried to take his father’s kingdom, and did take his father’s concubines. • Adonijah, in David’s old age, coveted and tried to take his brother’s kingdom. Been A Bad Example? Repent Ask God for Forgiveness Accept His Forgiveness

  13. Parents Are Not Always Responsible for Their Children’s Actions: • Ezek. 18:5-13— “But if a man is righteous and practices justice and righteousness,  6 and does not aeat at the mountain shrines or blift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or cdefile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period— 7 if a man does not oppress anyone, but arestores to the debtor his pledge, bdoes not commit robbery, but cgives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing, 8 if he does not lend money on ainterest or take bincrease, if he keeps his hand from iniquity and cexecutes true justice between man and man,  9  if he walks in aMy statutes and My ordinances so as to deal faithfully—bhe is righteous and will surely clive,” declares the Lord God. 10  “Then he may 1have a violent son who sheds blood and who does any of these things to a brother 11 (though he himself did not do any of these things), that is, he even eats at the mountain shrines, and adefiles his neighbor’s wife, 12 oppresses the apoor and needy, bcommits robbery, does not restore a pledge, but lifts up his eyes to the idols and ccommits abomination, 13 he alends money on interest and takes increase; will he live? He will not live! He has committed all these abominations, he will surely be put to death; his bblood will be 1on his own head.

  14. Good People Can Raise Bad Children • Hezekiahwas one of the best kings Judah had. (2 Kings 18:3-7) • Manasseh was the worst king Judah ever had. (2 Kings 21:2, 9, 16) • Jehovah was a perfect father to Israel but they rebelled against Him. (Hos. 11:1-4)

  15. Good Children Can Come from Bad Parents • Josiah was one of the best kings that Judah ever had. (2 Kings 22:2; 23:25) • Josiah’s father Amon was one of the worst. (2 Kings 21:19-22) • God expects children to out grow their raising if need be. • As an adult, the child, is ultimately responsible for his actions. (Ezek. 18:5-20)

  16. HELP FOR HURTING PARENTS • YOU ARE NOT ALONE • YOU ARE NOT NECESSARILY RESPONSIBLE • GOD UNDERSTANDS YOUR PAIN

  17. Jacob’s Children Caused Him Grief • Jacob would not be consoled when he thought Joseph was dead (Genesis 37:35) • Jacob was fearful of retribution when Simeon and Levi murdered the men of Shechem. (Genesis 34:30) • Jacob never forgot how Reuben defiled his bed. (Genesis 49:4)

  18. Some May Not Understand Your Pain • Those who have no children • Those who don’t have wayward children • These do not know your pain and it is not fair to say that they fully understand • Your mate may not fully understand • Unbelieving mate • Different people will cope differently • They may not communicate

  19. God Knows Exactly How You Feel: • God knows because He is God. • God knows because He is a Father. • God knows better than we do because He has a greater capacity to love than we do.

(Genesis 50:20) • Wicked Manasseh changed • 2 Chron. 33:10-16; • The prodigal son changed. • Luke 15:11-32; • The father never stopped hoping for change. (15:20)
