What is Staff Governance • The governance system is established by the Board of Regents Policy 03.01.010 • Staff governance purposes are to: • 1. provide an effective opportunity for staff to play a meaningful role in matters affecting their welfare; • 2. represent the viewpoints of staff on regents’ policy, university regulation, and other matters affecting the interests of the university; • 3. address through legislative action other matters as described in their approved constitutions; • 4. advise the president and chancellors in a timely fashion and in a manner set forth in individual organization constitutions ; and • 5. communicate to staff information which is of interest and concern to the university.

  3. Staff Governance Councils • UAA Staff Governance is composed of 2 councils • APT Council • Classified Council

  4. APT Council • Administrative, Professional, Technical • Exempt employees • 15 members • Representatives from Community Campuses are included • Meets at least 6 times per year • 1st Thursday of the month – 10:30am-12:00noon during the academic year • Meetings are open – all are welcome to attend • Agendas and summaries are posted on the Governance website

  5. APT Council • Members chosen by elections in Spring • Members serve 2 year terms • Officers – President and Vice President • President or designee serves on Statewide Staff Alliance APT Council meets jointly with Classified Council as needed

  6. APT Council • Members serve on UAA committees • University Assembly • Diversity • Safety • Communication • Other committees as needed • Members serve on Statewide committees • Staff Compensation • Staff Health Care • Other committees as needed

  7. Classified Council • The Council represents classified (non-exempt, hourly) employees • 24 members • Representatives from Community Campuses are included • Meets 8 times per year • 1st Thursday of the month – 8:30am-10:00am • Meetings are open – all are welcome to attend • Agendas and summaries are posted on the Governance website

  8. Classified Council • Members are chosen by election in Spring • Members serve 2 year terms • Officers – President, Vice President and Secretary • President or designee serves on Statewide Staff Alliance Classified Council meets jointly with APT Council as needed

  9. Classified Council • Members serve on UAA committees • University Assembly • Diversity • Safety • Communication • Other committees as needed • Members serve on Statewide committees • Staff Compensation • Staff Health Care • Other committees as needed

  10. University Assembly • Presidents of the councils act as spokespersons on UAA University Assembly • Each council has five seats on University Assembly • University Assembly reports to the UAA Chancellor

  11. Staff Alliance • The President or designee of each council serves on the Statewide Staff Alliance • Composed of officers from UAA, UAF, UAS and SW councils

  12. Staff Alliance • Responsibilities include input on personnel policies, staff affairs, regulations, compensation, benefits and other issues affecting the work environment • Staff Alliance Reports to UA President • Standing Committees • Compensation and Staff Health Care Committees • Has seats on Joint Health Care Committee • Has seats on other University committees including IT Executive Council, Student Services Council, Tuition Task Force and the Retirement Committee
