  1. Persuasive Paper Victoria Young Director of Reading, Writing, and Social Studies Assessments Texas Education Agency

  2. Organization - Responsiveness The organizing structure of the response fits the purpose for writing. Notes---- The content of the response must be focused on the purpose of the prompt. Notes----

  3. Organization - Progression Must convince the reader to accept the student’s viewpoint or to take a particular action Notes--- The essay must be a direct response to the prompt’s purpose and NOT READ or the THINK Notes---

  4. Organization - Focus The more narrow the focus, the better. Stay away from generalities. Notes--- All sentences contribute to the meaning and enhance understanding. Notes--- EACH sentence seamlessly blends and flows to the next sentence

  5. Organization - Progression Must be centered around a CLEAR position statement which represents the student’s viewpoint on the issue and forms the basis of the argument Position statement MUST be a direct assertion of what the student will argue in the essay and must DRIVE the way the student builds the argument.

  6. A Position Statement = Thesis Statement Position statement is too broad or general A position statement that is strange and mysterious.

  7. What Weakens Persuasive Writing The student moves randomly from sentence to sentence. The student repeats the prompt in the introduction or repeats the introduction in the conclusion. The student repeats the same sentence or paragraph throughout the paper.

  8. Persuasive Ideas A certain number of paragraphs is not required. Moving logically from sentence-to-sentence and connecting ideas is required. Meaningful transitions clarify relationship between sentences, paragraphs, and ideas. Do NOT use “first” or “next” or transitions like these.

  9. Quality vs. Quantity The quality of the development is more important than the quantity of the development. Each idea is enriched/enhanced by what came before it.

  10. Cluster Problems Clusters of ideas that are each linked to the prompt BUT ARE NOT CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER. Unconnected ideas = superficial development Superficial development = basic writing (2)

  11. Better than…. Narrow and deep development – fewer ideas with more specificity and depth. It is better than to have less with more depth than more ideas and less depth.

  12. Persuasive Bonus Points The student’s personal feelings and thinking about the task. Original and individualistic. Not formulaic – does not follow a specific outline pattern.

  13. How to Not Get a 4 Use a formulaic approach because that’s the only style you have practiced. This is a Big One – THE INCLUSION OF IDEAS THAT ARE TOO COMPLICATED, ABSTRACT, OR PHILOSOPHICAL OR ERUDITE FOR A STUDENT’S WRITING SKILLS.
