  1. Evangelism Series: Taking It Personal! Lesson 1:Introduction & Motivation Date: March 20, 2005 Preacher: David Pike Text: I Pt. 2:21-24; II Tm. 2:2

  2. We Are Commanded To Teach! The Apostles were given the Great Commission. They were commanded to go teach and preach to all people and make disciples. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.” (Mt. 28:19-20) “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.” (Mk. 16:15-16) Faithful Christians are commanded to teach others. “…commit these things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (II Tm. 2:2) In order to fulfill our duty to teach, we must be armed with the right: motivation, attitude, courage and tools.

  3. Why Have Evangelistic Efforts Failed? Key Issues Key Responses • Loss of evangelistic zeal • Lack of ability • Unprepared teachers • Lack of teacher training and assistance • Lack of living according to the gospel. • Having a proper motivation and attitude • Each doing our part • Dedicating time and study to training • Enhancing opportunities for others to teach • Verbalizing and incarnating the gospel We need to understand the key issues and our responses to fulfilling our duty to reach the lost.

  4. Motivation Is the “Steam” Powering Evangelism What is “Motivation?” Motivation is the “steam” that powers our knowledge to evangelize! • “An inner drive, an idea captured in the imagination.” • “Can be harnesses to an intense drive toward a goal.” • “Men and women push themselves forward, plow through the inevitable setbacks, heading ever onward to their dreams.” • “Is essential to succeeding in any endeavor you try.” • (Denis Waitley – THE JOY OF WORKING) “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.” (I Pt. 2:21) Let’s learn 5 things that motivated Jesus to reach His evangelistic goals.

  5. Compassion For Lost Souls Jesus was moved by compassion to heal the sick, feed the hungry and save the lost. “But when he saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” (Mt. 9:36) “…He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.” (Mt. 14:14) “I have compassion on the multitude because they have continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” (Mt. 15:32) We learn about Jesus’ compassion by study and mediation.

  6. Compassion For Lost Souls Compassion motivated Jesus to do two things. • Pray for laborers – “The harvest is truly plentiful, but the laborers are few: Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Mt. 9:37-38) • Do something about it – “These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them saying:…go, preach, saying the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Mt. 10:5-7) Meditate and learn to be compassionate from God! “But concerning brotherly love…you yourselves are taught by God to love one another.” (I Th. 4:9) Be around people. Get to know people. Appreciate people. Don’t be wrapped up in your own little world. “I never met a man I didn’t like.” (Will Rogers)

  7. Sense of Purpose Jesus stated His purpose and was determined to complete His work. “His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked to the woman: yet no one said What do you seek? Or Why are you talking with her?…Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” (Jh. 4:27, 34) Jesus stayed focused on his purpose to “seek and save the lost” based on His love for us. (Jh. 3:16; Lk. 19:10) We are commanded to teach - “commit these things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (II Tm. 2:2) AND We must put the Father’s will first – “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” (Mt. 6:33) Many people have a different purposes such as work, pleasure, sports, hobbies, etc. Study God’s Word to know the right purpose.

  8. The Love of The Father Jesus experienced God’s love and wanted to shared it with others. “As My Father loved Me, I also have loved you, abide in My love.” (Jh. 15:9) “And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You have loved Me, may be in them, and I in them.” (Jh. 17:26) The way to experience God’s love is to keep His commandments. “He who has My commandments and keep them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to Him…if anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him” (Jh. 14:21, 23) We experience God’s love by obeying His commands and learning more about Jehovah and Jesus!

  9. The Terror of the Lord Jesus was aware of God’s “righteous indignation.” • He taught the fear of the Lord – “…fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Mt. 10:28) • He warned of judgment to come – “…It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast in hell fire – where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.” (Mk. 9:43-48) We must take the “terror of the Lord” and His warnings seriously. “Knowing the terror of the Lord, we persuade men…” (II Co. 5:11) Don’t become complacent! Heed the warnings about judgment! Warn others of judgment to come! Don’t doubt the coming of the day of the Lord (I.e. II Pt. 3:4-9; II Th. 1:7-10; Re. 20:12-15; 21:8).

  10. The Joy Set Before Him Joy of being with God motivated Jesus to “endure the cross” and “despise the shame.” “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was before Him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hb. 12:2) Our joy and desire of living in eternity with Jesus is to be shared. “For what is our hope , or joy, or crown of rejoicing? It is not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? For you are our glory and joy.” (I Th. 2:19-20) God’s word provides a glorious description of heaven (Re. 7:13-17; 21:1-7). We must appreciate and look forward to going to heaven and taking others with us. We will not evangelize effectively without joy!

  11. Summary • Definition of Motivation:“men and women who are motivated push themselves forward, plow through the inevitable setbacks, • heading ever onward to their dreams.” • The early church looked to Jesus and found the motivation to grow. We can do the same today being motivated by: • Compassion for lost souls • A strong sense of purpose • The love of the Father • The terror of the Lord • The joy set before Him The Key Source of Motivation:Daily reading, studying, and mediating upon the Word of God (Ac. 17:11). It will become a “burning fire” in our heart and we will become “weary of holding it back.” (Jer. 20:9)
