  1. Rede Nacional de Ressonância Magnética Nuclear Portuguese NMR Network At the Service of Excellence in Science

  2. OUTLINE • The PT NMR network • Objectives • Management and Accessibility • Activities and Scientific Impact • Perspectives

  3. The PTNMR provides a service in NMR spectroscopy to the scientific community and companies. This service includes access to modern NMR equipment, service spectra for occasional users, trainingin NMR methods for regular users, consultation and collaboration on experimental design, data collection and analysis.

  4. Delivery of the 800 MHz magnet December 20th 2006

  12. Objectives of the PT NMR Network Scientific/Academic To promote the development of NMR and the advanced formation of human resources in Portugal To provide an integrated access to state-of-the-art NMR techniques and services to the scientific community and industry To contribute to the internationalization of the Portuguese science Management To promote implementation of integrated and good management practices in the host institutions To take care of the maintenance and funding of the infrastructure

  13. Management and Accessibility Management and accessibility according to a policy agreed between all partners and FCT-MCTES – Management Protocol Coordinator International Scientific Advisory Committee Management Committee (one per unit + 1 FCT-MCTES) Unit Manager Project Evaluation Panel (mainly for high field spectrometers) Support Staff Users

  14. Management and Accessibility All Information concerning equipment, services, management and accessibility available on-line at two levels: 1 - PtNMR Network webpage: http://ptnmr.dq.ua.pt Characterization and location of the network units, management model, services and expertise, contacts, network Activities (prizes, courses, conferences, etc) 2 – Individual Network Unit webpages Characterization of the network unit, type of equipment services and expertise, contacts, how to request spectrometer time, calendar of spectrometers occupancy, etc

  15. Booking Instrument Time

  16. Accessibility

  17. Activities and Scientific Impact Networking activities: First Meeting of the National NMR Network

  18. Activities and Scientific Impact • Networking activities • 70 % of high field (800 + 600 MHz) spectrometer time allocated to external services → promotion of researchers mobility within the network • Training: specialized and beginner courses • Beginner courses – held annually • Practical NMR course at CERMAX-ITQB, held annually since 2008 • NMR: From theory to practice (FCT-UNL) held annually since 2007 • Advanced courses – different specialized topics • Ligand based NMR interaction studies (FCT-UNL) – March 2010 • CCPNMR10 analysis (IGC/CERMAX) – June 2010

  19. Activities and Scientific Impact • Networking activities • Support to other advanced formation actions within PhD programs and International Summer Schools: • Summer School on “Proteins in Proteomics” (FCT-UNL) • Modern Methods of Structure elucidation (IST-UNL) • Biomedical Magnetic Resonance: Molecular imaging and Metabolism (CNC Doctoral Program – Coimbra) • - 1st PT NMR Meeting – Meeting on Biomolecular NMR – December 2009, ITQB

  20. Activities and Scientific Impact • External Services • Services to other Universities and industry is still a minor percentage of the spectrometer allocation time. Main Service Providers

  21. Scientific Impact in numbers (2008-2009) • Publications: • Book Chapters: 6 • Publications with relevant NMR contribution • 2008 – 171 • 2009 – 131 (until August 2009) • Projects(with relevant NMR contribution): 97 • (1 EU COST, 1 Marie Curie)

  22. Scientific Impact in numbers (2008-2009) • Support to PhD and post-doctoral fellows: • PhD students: more than 100(strongly NMR dependent work program) • 10 completed PhDs in the NMR field • Post-Doctoral: 40 fellowships

  23. Perspectives Continue to support the scientific and Academic community by providing services and education Establish partnerships and exchange programs with other related European Networks Contribute to increase the awareness of the potential of the PTNMR infrastructure in terms of service and contribution to the internationalization of the Portuguese R&D in Academia and Industry To ensure an integrated maintenance and updating plan of the infrastructure
