  1. Rejseplanen – Danish Road Directorate Travelplanner for bus, train and car Jørgen Sinding, Rejseplanen Charlotte Holstrøm, Danish Road Directorate

  2. Agenda • Rejseplanen, TRAFIKinfo corporation and the project (CH/JSI) • Objective for projekt (CH) • The technical solution (JSI) • Pilot project (CH) • Historical data GPS (CH) • User interface (JSI) • Demo  • Future

  3. Background for the project Rejseplanen • The most used public internet-service in Denmark: +8 mil. queries pr. month • The algorithm is based on German quality Trafikinfo • A co-operation between DSB, DSB S-tog, Movia, Ørestadsselskabet (Metro), Banedanmark, Frederiksberg municipality, Copenhagen municipality, Copenhagen police and DRD • Purpose: Make better use of the infrastructure, better information across authorities, realistic information on travel times Questions answered in the feasibility study 2007 • Would it be technically possible to integrate a car planner with Rejseplanen, even including P&R? • Would it be technically possible to gather realistic travel times for cars allowing a fair comparison of travel times for car and public transport? • How should the project be organized?

  4. Objectives for the project • Make a better use of the complete transport system by moving the traveler from car usage to public transport or at least try to move them to a combination of comodal journeys • More queries on Rejseplanen gives more travelers in public traffic • Presenting a better service for the traveler by offering more travel possibilities.

  5. Requirements in the project • Realistic car travel times for all major roads, not just the motorways where DRD has sensors today. i.e. probe data is required. • Comparison on price, CO2 and travel time. • Route choices should make sense. • It should be possible to change route choices if undesired behavior is detected. • It should include ferries • Payment at Danish bridges should be included in car price

  6. The technical solution – keep it simpel Recipe: The most realistic travel planner of trips, independent of means of transport in Denmark You need: • A big pot full of Rejseplanen. Then you add : • A granulated Navteq map of Denmark (For car navigation) • 1 kg. of a Danish background map (also for pedestrian and bicycle) • 120 millions GPS points, data for realistic driven speed via DRD’s GPS pilot project • Information about Park & Ride possibilities • Then you add knowledge from Rejseplanen’s vendors: Hacon, PTV and KeyResearch depending on needs and taste. Pour it all together • Use an route mixer from PTV (proven tool) It was not that easy…!

  7. A Pilotproject – could we do it ? • The use of KMS map as background maps • Which routing network – TeleAtlas or Navteq or? • Use of NAVTEQ network for calculating car routing • Integration between KMS, NAVTEQ and Rejseplanen • Appropriate route choices for car travels • Integration of congestion information in calculating of travel times and is the GPS data right ? • How to integrate park and ride in the solution • Consider the user interface – keep it easy for the user !

  8. Data comparisonDifferent results from different sites/studies

  9. Congestian calculation - 1 Congestian for 4 timeslots • Morning congestian (6.30 til 9.00) • Time between congestians (9.00 til 15.00) • Afternon congestian (15.00 til 17.30) • Evening /Night (17.30 til 6.30) The first calculation was done on the 3 upper levels of road classes in NAVTEQ (same as the numberede routenet and the bigger road in the citys.

  10. Calculating in slot times or peaks

  11. Congestion calculation - 2 Congestion for 11 timeslots • Morning congestion, pr ½ hour (6.30 to 9.00) • Mid day (9.00 to15.30) • Afternoon congestion, pr ½ hour (15.30 to 18.00) • Evening /Night (17.30 to 6.30) The first calculation was done on the 4 upper levels of road classes in NAVTEQ (all major roads in Denmark) Vi miss data for some period at night time and out side the major cities. Here we use standard travel times.

  12. Congestion calculation - morning Travel time for a given route compared with a travel diary

  13. Congestian calculation – afternoon Test : Dampfærgevej, 2100 – til Allerød VDs udregnede tid for ruten Måling med ”rigtig” bilist gennem en uge

  14. Teknology GPS fleet management GPS-database by Vejdirektoratet Speed-database GPS fleet management Digital road network

  15. Validation of GPS speed against other measurements (loops)

  16. Variation during the day

  17. Geogra-phical coverage

  18. Route choices • Route choices is a compromise between the technical limitation, when using the same algorithm and the same calibration for the whole network. • 32 cases has been developed and used to test the behavior of the travel planner. It is required that the travel planner perform better than the existing travel planners on the market.

  19. Time for some commercial

  20. Into the city by car?

  21. The Park and Ride challenge There are many nice park and ride places if you come from north of Copenhagen for example from Hillerød.

  22. P&R : Calculate different P&R places Destination Start

  23. P&R possibilities

  24. Connections

  25. User interface - GUI • There will be 2 different interfaces for the 2 different type of users: Rejseplanen.dk and trafikken.dk. • Rejseplanen has been considering what the users want and made the first draft layout.
