  1. Session 1: Skills  Sentence-building  Reading Images Reading Images is another of the Thinking Skills strategies from the KS3 Strategy. There are examples in the KS3 materials of its use in different subject areas, making it ideal for cross-curriculum skills-building too. Here is a brief explanation of one Reading Images lesson in French (the one you have on your CD)Introduction (Fr) Rationale for the lesson (Fr) L’objectif de la leçon est de réviser beaucoup de mots que nous avons appris cette année. Par exemple les descriptions, la famille, les opinions, et on va utiliser les images pour réviser créativement. Poser les questions – pupil annotates the picture. Rationale for the lesson (En) French – select and use language from different topics (like we have been doing in maths) – one reason is to revise for a test LiL – creativity – strategy is Reading Images LiL – make links between a skill you can use in this subject and also in Maths/Eng e.g. gather previous knowledge and understanding and use it in a new context to create something new – in this lesson, a detailed profile of the person in this photo. You’re going to work at reading an image in pairs in two different ways. One pair is going to create a profile, using language you’ve learnt in previous topics whilst the other pair with the same photo is going to write down some questions that they would ask in order to build up their profile of this person. After a few minutes you’ll get together and ask and answer those questions in French. After the interview all pupils should have annotated their own copies of the photo. Plenary – reflection on strategy as method for generating new language, and for revision of existing knowledge? Was it useful? Did it generate more output that a different revision lesson would? Was it more fun? NB: Go to the French_readingimageslesson PowerPoint on your CD to see the plenary questions, get further pictures to use for the lesson and to see the student feedback from the lesson.
