  2. Lyndon B. Johnson • After Kennedy was shot in 1963, his V.P. Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President • In 1964 Johnson was re-elected & pledged to fight the “War on Poverty” – efforts to help poor Americans

  3. The War on Poverty • First government-sponsored effort to involve poor African-Americans • Residents of poor neighborhoods placed in new jobs as day care workers, teacher aides, etc. • Head Start preschool offered for free in low-income neighborhoods • Education Act increased federal funding to colleges & provided low-interest student loans

  4. Homework • Read Ch 22, Sn 2 • Answer all questions and define key terms on page 803
