  1. Online text resources • websites that provide specialized articles & papers

  2. Notes • Many of these sites provide abstracts free. • Some provide a few full-text articles free, too. But usually you have to pay by credit card for full articles.

  3. Notes (continued) • In general, abstracts are sufficient for text analysis. • If you can find one or two full-text articles, use them for reading comprehension AND text analysis.

  4. Notes (continued) • You should take some time near the beginning of the course to visit these sites and find the best journal for you. • If you cannot find a journal in exactly the same field as yours, don’t worry! A journal from a related field is good, too.

  5. Notes (continued) • General, serious science journals, such as Nature, are also good. And popular science magazines like New Scientist are good, too. • For many students, the AWL Gapmaker, used on abstracts, may be an important part of your project work.

  6. Notes (continued) • You should document your search for journal articles: • where did you look? • did you browse or search? • what words did you use to search? • what journals did you find that were not appropriate for you?

  7. ScienceDirect, from Elsevier • www.sciencedirect.com • This has more than 1700 journals in 23 major classifications: agricultural & biological sciences; civil engineering; earth & planetary sciences; environmental science; and materials science. • Click on the Journals tab and Search for a Journal title.

  8. Choose a category here or type a word here

  9. A search for “building” found these four journals.

  10. Registering gives you more options, such as email alerts for new content.
