  1. Carbohydrate Counted School Meals The process for all school meals being carbohydrate counted and the impact of its implementation By Jennie Brown (Dietitian)

  2. Why Carbohydrate Count School Menus? • Carbohydrate counting from diagnosis • All children & young people inject/bolus at school • Most parents work therefore cannot supervise carbohydrate counting at lunchtime • Portions at school are different to at school • Carb counting accurately requires practice – school staff get little experience…and reluctant to!

  3. The Process of Carbohydrate Counting School Meals At New Cross there are patients from lots of different areas: • Wolverhampton • Dudley • Walsall • Shropshire • Staffordshire

  4. Wolverhampton School Meals • Jo Smith, School Meals Development Officer, Wolverhampton City Council analyses all Wolverhampton school menu recipes (see folder) • When menus change she emails them to me on request • From the information can work out carbohydrate content per portion • These are then put in tables for school & parents • Care plans contain ready reckoners for child’s carb ratios

  5. Staffordshire School Meals • More difficult! • Based on goodwill of a contact ,Food Development Assistant, Catering Service, Staffordshire County Council • They also analyse all school meals but time consuming extrapolating all data from database

  6. Other Outlying areas and Independent School Catering • Done on an ad-hoc basis • Meeting with school cook • Based on average contents for each food where labels aren’t available • Time-consuming! Meeting usually >1 hour + time to check carbs & type

  7. Common Problems – Cons • Keeping up with changes • Portion sizes can vary • Very time consuming • Special occasions (e.g. Christmas, Diamond Jubilees etc)

  8. Benefits - Pros • Schools more willing • Confidence for parents and child • Better control • More clarity for all
