    2. CASO CLÍNICO Mujer de 38 años embarazada que asiste a su segundo control prenatal en el hospital. Se le practica la segunda ecografía de rutina, en la semana 24 de gestación. La ecografía revela un feto de género femenino acompañado de una malformación vertebral a nivel lumbrosacro (L5 – S1)

    3. Se programa una cesárea a la semana 37. Al examen físico tras el nacimiento del bebé se mide un perímetro craneal de 39 cm. (Normal: 34- 35 cm.) Se observa una bolsa a nivel lumbar, bien delimitada y con una membrana fina brillante. Se diagnostica mielomeningocele con hidrocefalia asociada.

    29. ¡EL ÁCIDO FÓLICO FUNCIONA! 50-70% de las MTN se previenen si hay consumo de Ac. Fólico (400 ug) 1 mes antes de la concepción y en los primeros 3 meses de la gestación. Estudio en USA: Tras fortificación obligatoria de los cereales en 1998 disminuyó la prevalencia de espina bífida en un 3% y de anencefalia en un 16%. Las MTN están relacionadas con un estrato socioeconómico bajo. Estudio prospectivo entre mujeres embarazadas que consumieron suplemento àcido fólico (800 ug) 1 mes antes de la concepcion y 2 meses después de la gestación y otras que consumieron suplemento de oligoelementos durante el mismo periodo de tiempo. Resultado: Primer grupo, las mujeres que consumieron ácido fólico tuvieron sus hijos sin presentar MTN. El segundo grupo, de 2.391 niños nacidos, 6 presentaron MTN.
