  1. Shirk

  2. Major Shirk • Minor Shirk • Shirk can be out ward and apparent • Shirk can be hidden • people's niyyah(intention), their goal and motives behind their actions • no one knows (of) except Allah Types of Shirk

  3. Ar-Riyaa of Major Shirk • A person who beautifies his/her action(s) in order that the people may see him/her and praise him/her (Shirk-Akbar) • It could be to acquire some wealth or other worldly gain • Sign of the Munafiqeen (hypocrites) • A disbeliever – act never occurs from believers • Ar-Riyaa of Minor Shirk • Believers intend good but some where along the line mix their intentions Ar-Riyaa

  4. Proof from Quran Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salaah (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little. [4:142] Ar-Riyaa

  5. First Situation: • As for the first: If a person commenced an action and intended it for other than Allah from the beginning, and this intention continued right through the whole of the action till the end of it, it is rejected and Allah will not accept this action. • For example, a person who set out to perform the salaah – from the outset he wanted to be praised, and this intention continued with him along to the end of the prayer – then this prayer in its entirety is not accepted. This is due to the hadeeth that we will discuss shortly in shaa' Allah. A hadeeth which comes in this chapter. Ar-Riyaa

  6. Second Situation: • As for the second situation: This is when a person intends to do an action for the sake of Allah. However, at some point during the action, Ar-Riyaa’ enters into it. So his intention or motive is now mixed with some other motive. Now, if this person makes tawbah while performing this action, i.e. he realizes that Ar-Riyaa has occurred, and he tries to repel it from his heart, and has a feeling of remorse, and he makes his intention purely for Allah again, then this will not harm the person because the original intent behind the action was for Allah and Ar-Riyaa came into it, but he repelled it, and he made his action purely for Allah again. So this here will not harm him. Meaning, Ar-Riyaa that became mixed with it during the action will not harm him. This is because he repelled it, fought against it and purified his heart. Ar-Riyaa

  7. Third Situation: • The third situation is when a person begins his action purely for the sake of Allah but during some point of the action, Ar-Riyaa comes into his heart and this Riyaa continues till the end of the action. In this scenario, he doesn’t actually repel or fight against this Riyaa, rather it remains with him until the end of the action. • Concerning this, there is difference of opinion between the people of knowledge, from amongst them are those who said that this Riyaa will actually negate the entire action. And there are others who said that this person will be rewarded for the duration for which his niyyah was for Allah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala). And for the duration that his niyyah was for other than Allah, then that will be nullified. Ar-Riyaa

  8. The first condition is to be sincere to Allaah and free and pure of Ar-Riyaa, As-Sumu’a and from all the various types of shirk, whether major or minor • The second condition is that it is in agreement with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (salallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) and free from innovations and newly invented affairs and heretical things. Conditions for an action to be accepted by Allah
