OpInform 2015 Strategies Which high school courses are beneficial for students who wish to enter a health care profession? • Chemistry and Biology regents • Math courses in Algebra and Geometry • College course that would be applicable to a health-related field that may be offered to a high school student (ex. English Composition, college- level biology)

OpInform 2015 Strategies What is beneficial for high school counselors to consider when working with high school students interested in health-related fields? • Application deadlines • Additional requirements that each individual college may require • Additional testing that high school students may need to complete (ex. TEAS, or college placement testing) • Requirements for individual programs are very specific

  4. OpInform 2015 What to do with those high school students we know just will not make it into a restricted healthcare program like nursing, radiology or physical therapy assistant?

  5. OpInform 2015 Explain other health career/program options, such as: Medical Assistant Liberal Arts Medical Transcription (certificate program) Phlebotomy (certificate program) Clinical Laboratory Technician Health Studies

OpInform 2015 Real strategy for students who may not succeed in any health profession: • High school students who are struggling in science courses, but who want a profession that will contribute to an individual’s well being should consider Human Services. • Human Services will allow students to move into a career of social work, counseling, teaching, consulting and human services management.

  7. OpInform 2015 Exercise • Scenario 1: High school student has failed numerous science courses and the parents are pushing for the student to enter a health profession. How and what could you say to explain options to the student and parents? • Scenario 2: High school student is average in science courses, but will probably not make it into a restricted major such as Nursing or Radiology. How would you show and explain to the student other health career professions? • Scenario 3: High school student has all pre-requisites for a restricted program. What guidance can you offer to better prepare them for a program?

  8. OpInform 2015 Transfer Pathways: Options • Liberal arts may prepare the student better for transferring from an associate program to a bachelor’s program. • Options for some students to transfer may be in Human Services or Health Studies.

  10. OpInform 2015 Transfer Pathways: SUNY Transfer Paths • SUNY Transfer Paths summarize the common lower division requirements shared by all SUNY campuses for similar majors. • Help students identify core coursework that will prepare them for transfer.

  11. OpInform 2015 Seamless transfer requires advance planning. Encourage students to reach out to colleges and universities for assistance. Admissions counselors will work with high school counselors and potential students to guide them through a seamless transfer process. Work with Admissions Counselors to create a transfer plan
