Internationalization of Education, Conference of Asian University Presidents 2008 Progress towards Internationalization PhaseⅠ 1994~2000 Phase Ⅱ 2001~2008 Phase Ⅲ 2009~ ● KU set up the International Affairs Strategy (1999) ● Inauguration of CAPs and the University Summit in Kyushu (2000) ● KU established the Organization for the Promotion of International Affairs (2002) ●100th Anniversary Several academic programs taught in English were developed. Student exchange programs were introduced. More varieties of academic programs and scholarship programs for both international and domestic students have been developed. Mobility of students and faculty has been accelerated by the collaboration of CAPs. Internationalization of Education, Conference of Asian University Presidents 2008 Progress towards Internationalization -PhaseⅠ(1994-2000) • National goal of raising the number of international students studying in Japanese higher education up to 100,000 by 2000 • 1993 The US-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON) • referred to the need to increase the number of American undergraduate students • studying in Japan. The Japanese government took an action for the development of special courses taught in English for exchange students at Japanese national universities • 1994 Japan in Today’s World (JTW) • A 10-month academic program for foreign undergraduate students to study in Japan using English as the medium of instruction. The first of its kind to be introduced at a national university. • - Independent Study Project • - Academic courses on Japanese Studies taught in English • - Japanese language course • - Advanced laboratory course • Introducing student exchange programs for Kyushu students • 4 exchange students were sent to University of Washington, University of Michigan and Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich for the first year,1996. (As of May 1, 08)

Program in International Economic and Business Law • A one-year master’s program. Japan's first LL.M. program taught entirely in English. • International Development Research Course • A two-year master’s program and three-year doctoral program by the Graduate School of Bioresources and Bioenvironmental Sciences • Comparative Studies of Politics and Administration in Asia (CSPA) • A one-year master’s program to train people who aim to work in Asian local government organizations and as officials in Asian international organizations. • 1999 LL.D. Program in International Economic and Business Law • A two-to-three-year doctoral program. • International Special Course for Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences • A three-year doctoral program by the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences • 1999 Young Leader’s Program (YLP) • A one-year master’s program by the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT) in Public Administration, Business Administration and Law. (Inaugurated in 2001)

Internationalization of Education, Conference of Asian University Presidents 2008 Progress towards Internationalization –Phase Ⅲ(2009~ ) New projects to accelerate internationalization ASEAN Selected for the “Programs to Accelerate the “Internationalization of University Education” by MEXT ASEAN Secretariat ASEAN in Today’s World (AsTW) 3-week joint offshore program on Asian languages & cultures and ASEAN studies taught in English. Support Jointly implemented with Mahidol U. in Thailand , March 08 Kyushu U. Mahidol U. Joint Organizer AsTW is an ASEAN-focusing program for world youth, officially recognized by ASEAN Secretariat, and planned to be held each year in collaboration with a university in any ASEAN country. For 2009 and 2010, Mahidol University is co-organizing AsTW. Support ASEAN University Network (AUN) Students from ASEAN, East Asia & other non-ASEAN countries
