  3. Sound Devices • Elements of literature and poetry that emphasize sound. • Euphony- pleasantness in sound • Cacophony- harshness in sound

  4. Onomatopoeia • the creation of words that imitate natural sounds • Ex. buzz, hiss • Epistrophe • Repetition of a word or a phrase at the end of successive, phrases, clauses, or sentences • Ex. “…of the people, by the people, for the people”

  5. Assonance • The repetition of vowel sounds in words that are placed near each other, usually on the same or adjacent lines. • These should be in sounds that are accented, or stressed, rather than in vowel sounds that are unaccented. • He’s a bruisin’ loser. • Peter and Andrew patted the pony at Ascot.
